Hybridization of Upland Cotton

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This experiment was conducted at Cotton Research Center Rangpur during the season 2011-2012 to create the heterozygosity of the offspring. Fifty four(54) off springs were obtained from two sets of experiment through desirable bi-directional cross that is 6×6 diallel cross.In all cases success of crossing was satisfactory. The range of success was 70-90% for seed formation of F0 generation. Twelve (12) parents were involved in these two hybridization program.

Objectives:

The main objectives of this hybridization program were to increase the yield potentiality, to increase GOT%, and transfer of the pest tolerance traits to the offspring. The improved variety should have sufficient degree of adaptability, resistant to drought and pest. Breeding for high yield, gossypol free varieties are also important objectives of Cotton Development Board.

Methodology:

These two experiment were performed with 12 (twelve) parental lines/varieties at cotton Research Center, Rangpur in the growing season 2011-2012. Full diallel crosses were done in the on going program. Twelve parental line were as follows-1. CB-10, 2. Giza-86, 3.CB-12, 4. M-2, 5. CB-5, 6. SC-09, 7. Ra-1, 8. Ra-2, 9. Ra-3 .10. Ra-4, 11. Ra-5 and 12. Ra-7. In case of parent selection emphasis has been given on pest tolerance, life cycle, yield potentiality, GOT% and other yield contributing traits.Bi-directional crosses were involved here.Fifty four (54) crosses had done. In the first hybridization plot and in first cross, CB-10 was the female and Giza-86, CB-12, M-2 and SC-09 were male, number of crosses were four. In the second cross Giza-86 was the female, the other selected three entries such as CB-10, M-2 and CB-5 were male, where number of crosses were three. In the third cross CB-12 was the female and other five selected entries such as CB-10, Giza-86, M-2, CB-5, SC-09 were the male, number of crosses were five.

Achievement/Findings:

Agronomic and important qualitative traits of the parent materials were presented. Success of crossing was presented The agronomic and lint characteristics were shown. The basis of parent selection was shown. CB-10 & CB-5 were moderately early, moderately disease susceptible, glabrous leaf, high yielder and well adapted.Giza-86, CB-12, DM-2, SSC-09, Ra-1, Ra-2, Ra-3 .Ra-4, Ra-5 and Ra-7 were selected for their earliness, disease susceptibility, high yield capacity (above 2 ton/ha), high GOT% and pest tolerance traits. Success of crossing was remarkable and the range was 70-90%.
