Study of Heterosis in Upland Cotton ( 6×6 Full Diallale Cross)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Cotton Research Center Rangpur during the season 2011-2012 to study the heterosis of 37 F₁ hybrids obtained from two cross combination of 6×6 half diallel crosses that were made previous years. In case of seed cotton yield, 5 F1s hybrids of CB-1, 4 F₁s hybrids of CB-3, 6 F1s hybrids of CB-5, 1 F₁s hybrids of BC-042,7 F₁s hybrids of CB-9,2 F₁s hybrids of CB-10 and 5 F₁s hybrids of BC-088 showed better parent heterosis . 1 F₁s hybrids of CB-1, 2 F1s hybrids of BC-042 and 1 F1s hybrids of CB-10 showed mid parent heterosis in seed cotton yield. 1 F₁s hybrids of CB-1 and 2 F₁s hybrids of CB-10 showed negative heterosis in seed cotton yield.

Objectives:

The purpose of present experiment was to study the heterosis in F₁ hybrids over mid parent and better parent those were obtained from 6x6 half diallel cross of upland cotton in the previous year and there by developed a HYV and short duration variety.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with fourteen parental lines/varieties and their 37 F₁ hybrids at Cotton Research Center Rangpur in the growing season 2011-12. 6×6 half diallel crosses were made in two hybridization plot and seven parents were unidirectional crossed in another plot in the previous year. From above three crosses we obtained 37 F₁ hybrids. The F₁ hybrids along with its parental lines were grown on 25 July 2011 in RCBD design with three replications. During crop growing periods standard cultural practices were followed. Data were collected on number of vegetative branches, number of main stem node of first fruiting branch (N.F.B), number of primary fruiting branches/plant, number of secondary fruiting branches, days to first flowering, days to first boll split, plant height, number of plants at harvested area, number of boll per plant, single boll weight, seed cotton yield per plot. Analysis of variance for different yield contributing traits were estimated by MASTAT Program. The percentage of heterosis and heterobeltosis were calculated according to the following formula-MP heterosis= {(F₁-MP)÷ MP}×100.Where MP=mean of the associated parents. BP= {(F₁ - BP) ÷ BP} ×100 Where BP=values of the better parents.

Achievement/Findings:

Out of 37 F1 hybrids thirty cross combination showed heterobeltosis ranging from 2. 43 % to 88.83 % and compare to mid-parent five showed positive heterosis ranging 4. 97 to 16.09 %. The highest heterobeltosis came from crosses combination of BC – 042×B-04/10. Five hybrids of CB-1, four hybrids of CB-3, six hybrids of CB-5, one hybrid of BC-042, seven hybrids of CB-9, two hybrids of CB-10 and five hybrids of BC-088 showed better parent heterosis. One hybrid of CB-1, two hybrids of BC-042 and one hybrid of CB-10 showed mid-parent heterosis in seed cotton yield. One hybrid of CB-1 and two hybrids of CB-10 showed negative heterosis in seed cotton yield.
