To interpret the changing trends of land use over time Land use Map-1975 and Land use Map-2004 developed by SRDI was considered. Intensive group study had made to recognize important features and differences of the two maps and their legends. Land use was substantially changed and diversified from 1975 to 2004. Broadcast aman and mixed aus and aman paddy existed extensively in 1975, which have been dramatically decreased in 2004. Meanwhile boro paddy has taken a large portion of cropland agriculture. Cropland, forest, shrubs, bushes and grazing land comprises 13.71 Mha of land. Rest 1.05 Mha is occupied by urban or metro area, river, water bodies, lake and beach, shrimp cultivation, salt bed, quarry and mud land. Rain-fed and single cropped land have been changed substantially to double or triple cropped land over time resulting higher cropping intensity due to increased irrigation facilities, HYV crops and the increased food demand. High value crops i.e., vegetables, spices and plantation crops (e.g. floral plants) have been proliferated considerably in the present land use patterns. Horizontal expansion of agricultural land in our country has become almost to its climax.

Agricultural land use reflects the socio-economic condition of a country. It plays a vital role for many planning and management activities concerned. One of the prime prerequisites for better use of land is information on existing land use patterns and changes in land use through time. Henceforth, a comparative study had been carried out with the objective of evaluating the changing trends of land use through comparison between Land use map 1975 and 2004 developed by SRDI.

To interpret the changing trends of land use over time Land use Map-1975 and Land use Map-2004 developed by SRDI was considered. Extensive study was made to find out the similarities and dissimilarities between the two maps. Map legends were compared putting them side by side. Intensive group study had made to recognize important features and differences of the two maps and their legends. To develop Land use Map-2004 materials used were aerial photos, topo-sheets and ULSRUG or Upazila Nirdeshika with soil and landform maps attached therein. Upazila land use maps of the whole country were prepared by SRDI from updated data/ information using the soil and land form maps and the other materials cited. Successive field investigations (survey), individual-contact method (farm-visits), group-contact method (discussion meetings), and in-house extensive studies were made. Sequentially, district wise, regional and national land use maps were prepared. Field verifications were made in every step. In general the cropping patterns occupies more than 40% or relatively greater area of the unit (mapping unit) was considered as primary land use and the rest other uses were considered as secondary land use. Soil mapping units having the same primary land use were marked and brought under a single land use unit. Soil-mapping units having similar primary land use were added to measure the area occupied and furnished in land use legend. Soil and landform maps were thus transformed into Upazila land use maps with necessary amendment or correction on the basis of present land use. District land use map was prepared by adding all Upazila land use maps. In sequence, four regional land use maps (Rajshahi, Khulna, Dhaka and Chittagong) were compiled. Finally the national Land use Map – Bangladesh 2004 was prepared accordingly.

Knowledge about land use and land cover has become increasingly important as the nation plans to overcome the problems of haphazard and uncontrolled development deteriorating environmental quality and loss of prime agricultural lands. The land use patterns of Bangladesh have been substantially changed in the last three decades. The increased food demand for growing population, introduction of irrigation facilities and modern agricultural machineries, changes in aptitude of the consumers over time, innovation of new varieties and improved seed technology, farming system research and better extension services to the farmers and changes of subsistence farming to commercial farming to some extent, changes in tenant system changes in learning and well-being of the farmers are the underlying causes to made land use change to be happened. It is estimated from Land use map 2004 and its description that about 60% of cropped area is under irrigation system. The cropping intensity has been increased remarkably, but the crop yield attained is not sufficient to pace with the growing population. It is also evident that there is limited land surface to grow crops in our country. The findings of the study would make different government and non-government development agencies, individual researchers and national policy makers of the country to think about better management practices of the limited land resources.
