Effect of Water Management and Sowing Date on Direct Wet Seeded Boro Rice Cultivation by Drum Seeder Method-2007-8

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study on effect of water management and sowing date on direct wet seeded boro rice cultivation indicated that late sowing with irrigation when water is 15 cm below the ground surface in perforated PVC pipe reduced irrigation water and maintained favorable environment for getting maximum grain yield and water productivity. Interaction effect of sowing date and water treatment was not statistically significant on yield and also yield contributing characters. The highest number of filled grain per panicle (90) was observed in the interaction effect of 16th December sowing and water treatment was irrigation when water is 15 cm below the ground surface. Minimum sterility (%) was found in 1st December sowing and water treatment was saturation. The highest grain yield was 4.97 t/ha found from 16th January sowing and water treatment was irrigation when water is 15 cm below the ground surface. The lowest yield (3.67 t/ha) was observed in 31st December sowing and water treatment was irrigation when water is 30 cm below the ground surface in PVC pipe.

Objectives:

To identify appropriate sowing time for direct wet seeded boro rice cultivation
To identify the best water management practice for direct wet seeded boro rice cultivation
To compare the interaction effect of sowing time and water management practice

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out with three irrigation treatments and four sowing dates. The experiment was laid out in a split design with three replications having unit plot size of 2.5m×4.5m. Sowing dates were in main plot and water management treatments were in sub plot. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 220-120-85-60-10 kg/ha of urea, TSP, MP, gypsum and Zinc sulfate, respectively. Except urea all fertilizers were applied during the final land preparation. Urea was applied in four equal splits at 25, 40, 55 and 65 days after sowing (DAS). The rice cultivar was BRRI dhan28. Water treatment I₁=continuous standing water (2-7 cm) I₂=Irrigation (5-7 cm) when water is 15 cm below the soil surface I₃=Irrigation (5-7 cm) when water is 30 cm below the soil surface. Sowing date were S₁=01 Dec S₂=16 Dec S₃=01 Jan S₄=16 Jan.

Achievement/Findings:

In boro season, total ET demand was varied from 318.4 mm to 348.2 mm. Early sowing plant required ET demand was higher than late sowing plant. Effective tiller/m², filled grain/panicle and grain yield was statistically significant different by sowing date but irrigation treatment only influenced grain yield. Interaction effect of sowing date and water management did not affect grain yield and yield components. January 16 sowing with irrigation when water is 15 cm below the ground surface in perforated PVC pipe reduced irrigation water and maintained favorable environment for getting maximum grain yield and water productivity.
