Study of Factors Contributing to Increased Boro Rice Production in 1999

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at two favorable and unfavorable districts of rice production with 5 different objectives.The result showed that the coverage of MV boro rice increased in 1999 compared to 1998 in both favorable and unfavorable areas. Compared to 1998, the yield of MV boro rice in 1999 increased almost equally, by about 20% in both favorable and unfavorable districts. Five physical, socio-economic and biotic factors were associated with the sustainability of boro rice in the study areas. Such as: availability of irrigation, use of new rice seeds, prevalence of favorable weather, lower price of inputs and less occurrence of insects/pest. From regression analysis of farmer responses, it was found that, availability of irrigation, use of new rice seeds and agricultural credit were the factors that play the vital role in sustainability the level of MV boro production.

Objectives:

To identify the factors influencing the adoption of modern rice varieties for increased acreage in boro season, 1999
To assess the contribution of different variables in increasing yield of MV boro rice

Methodology:

The study was involved data collection from secondary sources of district and thana level information and primary data collection by interviewing farmers directly using a pre-tested questionnaire. Details data collection methods were as follows 1. Field survey conducted two favorable condition (Bogra and Sherpur) districts and two unfavorable (Kurigram and Rajshahi) districts. The unfavorable district considered which have affected flood and drought severity. A total of 206 farmers were randomly chosen. Both descriptive and statistical techniques were used for data analysis 2. Data were collected for the no. of irrigation devices and their respective areas covered by surface and ground water sources 3. Secondary data were collected from the following organizations: DAE, BADC, BMDA, RDA and NMIDP. 4. National minor irrigation census data from NMIDP and BBS were used. 5. Data from other agency reports were also used

Compared to 1998, the yield of MV boro rice in 1999 increased almost equally, by about 20% in both favorable and unfavorable districts. From this study, the information for the policy makers and planners that yield can be sustained for boro season in future if ensure irrigation facilities, adoption of BRRI new release MV rice, timely supply of credit for proper input management.
