Water Saving Technique for Boro Rice Cultivation Through Land Preparation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A large amount of water is required for land preparation in boro season. To minimize the water requirement, a field study was under taken at BRRI farm, Gazipur. Three land preparation practices were followed (pre-plowed land preparation, no-tillage land preparation and normal land preparation. The result indicates that, the total water required for land preparation including land soaking under pre-plowing treatment was 168 mm which was 20% less than farmers' practice. Yield obtained under pre-plowed treatment was significantly higher than no-tillage and farmers practice. For boro season, pre-plowed land preparation practice was more profitable than no-tillage and normal land preparation practices. This was happened due to less amount of water required for land preparation (1168 mm) and high yield (6.25 t.ha^-1).

Objectives:

To quantify and compare the amount of water required for different land preparation practices for rice cultivation in boro season
To determine economic profitability of the land preparation technique and rice yield under irrigated environment

Methodology:

The experiment was laidout in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with methods of land preparation practices for boro rice cultivation. The water was applied in each plot with quantification. Land preparation practices were: L₁=pre-plowed land preparation L₂=No-tillage land preparation L₃=Normal land preparation. Fertilizer was applied at the rate of 220, 120, 85, 60 and 10 kg of Urea, TSP, MP, gypsum and zinc per hectare, respectively. The Whole TSP, MP, gypsum and Zinc were applied as basal and urea were applied as equal three split. Weeding was done manually, immediately after the first and second top dressing. Soil samples were collected with a soil auger from 0-15, 15-30 and 30-45 cm soil depths for each practice.

Achievement/Findings:

Total water required for land preparation including land soaking under pre plowed was about 168 mm and under no tillage and normal tillage were 250 and 209 mm, which showed that pre plowed required 20% less and no tillage required 20 % excess water than farmers' practice. Total costs of production for three methods of land preparation were considered including total variable costs in the analysis. Total production costs per hectare under pre plowed, no and normal tillage were Tk 29023, Tk 31376 and Tk 32985, respectively.
