Water Requirement for Boro Rice Cultivation Under Different Land Preparation and Planting Practices-2001

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A large amount of water needed during land preparation in boro season. This study was taken to minimize water requirement for land preparation with the treatments of zero tillage and normal farmers' practice and three planting practices such as line sowing, broadcasting and transplanting. Amount of water required for land preparation, including land soaking in line sowing under farmers practices was about 97 mm, which was the minimum water required for land preparation. On the other hand, water required for transplanting under zero tillage was about 225 mm, which showed that line sowing under farmers practices needed 47% less water for land preparation. Whereas, transplanting under zero tillage required 22 excess water than that of farmers' land preparation practice.

Objectives:

To quantify the water required and yield of boro rice cultivation under zero and normal tillage practices
To compare the economic profitability of zero-tillage practice

Methodology:

The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with two land preparation practices and three methods of planting in split plot design. Volume of water was measured during land preparation and growing period. Land preparation practices were: L₁=zero tillage L₂=normal tillage Planting methods were: P₁=line sowing; P₂=broadcasting; P₃=transplanting. Fertilizer was applied at the rate of 220, 120, 85, 60 and 10 kg of urea, TSP, MP, gypsum and zinc per ha. respectively. The whole of TSP, MP, gypsum and zinc were applied as basal after final land preparation and urea was top dressed as three equal splits. weeding was done twice manually, immediately after the first and second top dressing. Herbicide was applied in P₁ and P₂ plots under both l₁ and l₂ after planting for weed control. Soil samples were collected at 0-15, 15-30 and 30-45 cm soil depths.

Achievement/Findings:

During growing season, irrigation water required for transplanting plots were nearly same under both zero tillage and normal tillage. in line sowing and broadcasting of both zero tillage and normal tillage, required excess 52-53 mm irrigation water due to early irrigation start than transplanting under zero tillage and normal tillage. Yield obtained in transplanting under normal tillage was highest (6394 kg/ha) followed by transplanting (5867 kg/ha) under zero tillage and lowest in broadcasting (4748 kg/ha) under zero tillage.
