Technical Evaluation of Plastic Pipe in Different Arrangements for Water Distribution System-2001

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted on plain land (land slope is about 0.253%) in a DTW outlet at BRRI farm and Kapasia, Gazipur. In terms of water and cost saving improved earthen channel was economical than traditional channels and use of plastic pipe for irrigation purpose was superior to both unimproved and improved earthen channels. Irrigation coverage was increased about 37% and the conveyance loss was decreased about 81% in compare to earthen channel by introducing the PVC and plastic pipe distribution system in a DTW at Kapasia, Gazipur. In different flow condition, the maximum pressure head (4.25 m) developed in the pipe was not created any problem on the DTW. Economically, the partial pipe distribution in a DTW irrigation system was encouraging considering BCR, IRR and sensitivity analysis. In STW irrigation system clamp jointing method of plastic pipe was the most suitable in water distribution up to about 100-200 m apart from the pump. But irrigation water can efficiently be delivered to about 100-150 m distance by using pipe with overlap and extra overlap jointing methods. Average water loss was reduced by 90% by using plastic pipe in compared to the earthen channel.

Methodology:

This study was conducted on plain land (land slope is about 0.253%) in a DTW outlet at BRRI farm and Kapasia, Gazipur. In this experiment only 100 mm diameter plastic pipe was used with different lengths up to 213.41 m with the following three pipe fitting treatments: T₁=Overlap jointing T₂=Extra overlap jointing by another piece of plastic pipe T₃=Clamp jointing with PVC pipe.

Achievement/Findings:

The study reveals that the conveyance losses in different pipe fitting varied slightly depending on the length and discharge of the pump. Discharge varied from 0.59 to 2.10 lit/sec/100 m in different pipe jointing system. For suitable pipe fittings of overlap joint, extra overlap joint and clamp joint, the conveyance losses were 0.61, 0.62 and 0.59 lit/sec/100 m, which was only 4.7%, 3.8% and 2.6% of the pump discharge, respectively. Conveyance loss of plastic pipe for different fittings were varied from 0.59 to 0.62 lit/sec/100 m. On the other hand conveyance loss in earthen channel (clay loam soil) varied from 5.70 to 5.87 lit/sec/100 m depending on the discharge of the pump.
