A Feasibility Study on Appropriate Mechanization at Gazipur Sadar Upazilla, Gazipur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In salna, there are 10 power tillers for 445 has of land where as in Bhabanipur only 2 power tillers for 810 ha land. The number of weeder, sprayers and winnowers are more in Salna than that of Bhabanipur. About 55% of the total cultivated are is irrigated in Salna.On the other hand only 30% is in Bhabanipur. Population density is more in Salna than that of Bhabaniur. It was reported that land preparation by power tiller is cheaper (Tk 2100/ha) than that by country plough (Tk. 2800/ha). The labour shortage is met by the migrated labour from Mymensingh and Jamalpur districts. The irrigation cost in Bhabanipur was Tk. 2800/ha per season without fuel; whereas the irrigation cost in Salna was Tk. 2100/ha per season (electrically operated DTW).

Objectives:

To find out the draft power requirement for tillage & related agricultural operations in the farms of the selected site.
To study the feasibility of use of the power tiller weeder, multicrop thresher, drier etc. in that area.
To Suggest a compatible combination of agricultural machinery for proper mechanization

Methodology:

The criteria in selecting sites for mechanization study were as follows: i) Rice based cropping pattern. ii) Irrigated area. iii) High HYV adoption. iv) Easy access preliminary information was collected from the site. A survey questionnaire was prepared.

Achievement/Findings:

Farmers used power tiller, weeder, sprayers and winnower in their farming operation. Area coverage under irrigation was about 55% and 30% of the total cultivated land in Salna and Bhabanipur, respectively. Land preparation by power tiller is cheaper that by country plough. The labour shortage is met by the migrated labour from Mymensingh and Jamalpur districts.
