Screening of Potato Varieties and Cip Germplasms Against Salt Tolerance

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fifteen CIP germplasm along with check variety Diamant and DohazariSada were evaluated at Baskhali, Chittagong, Kuakata, Patuakhali& ARS, Satkhira during 2011-12 crop season for their suitability against salt tolerance. Among all the studied germplasm and variety, CIP-139 gave highest yield (21.18 t/ha) at Satkhira, CIP-124 had 14.72 t/ha at Kuakata, Patuakhali and CIP-130 produced 32.45 t/ha at Baskhali, Chittagong which showed their potentiality against salinity than other germplasm/variety. Considering all the locations, CIP 130 (19.56t/ha), CIP 126 (17.00t/ha), CIP 134 (16.41) and CIP 112 (16.10t/ha) showed moderate to highest tolerance against salinity.

Objectives:

Selection of suitable germplasms for saline areas.

Methodology:

Fifteen different CIP clones were evaluated for salt tolerance trial at three different locations (Baskhali, Chittagong; Kuakata, Patuakhali& ARS, Satkhira). The CIP clones included in this trial and brief of the experiments are shown in Table 1.74 & 1.75. Fertilizers were applied @ 325-220-250-120 kg/ha of Urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum, respectively. Full amount of TSP, MP and Gypsum and 50% of urea were applied as basal and the remaining amount of urea was side dressed at 35 DAP. Weeding, irrigation, earthing-up and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. All the yield and yield contributing characters data were recorded and were statistically analyzed. Plant vigor and senescence was recorded on 1-5 scale, where 1 is very poor vigor and 5 is highly vigorous while 1 is very poor senescence i.e. greenish and 5 is highly senescence. Salinity level of experimental plots soil was analyzed. The level of soil salinity was measured in different stages of plant growth and it was ranged from 5.15 to 14.74 ds/m at Satkhira, 2.3 to 6.41 ds/m at Chittagong and 2.46 to 9.2 ds/m at Patuakhali (Fig.1).

Achievement/Findings:

Considering all the locations, four clones viz. CIP 130 (19.56t/ha), CIP 126 (17.00t/ha), CIP 134 (16.41) and CIP 112 (16.10t/ha) among fifteen showed moderate to highest tolerance against salinity.
