Replicated Progeny Row Trial of Hill Cotton (gossypium Arboreum)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This experiment was conducted at Cotton Research Sub-Station, Matiranga, khagrachari during the season 2011-2012 to select superior genotypes. There were four entries among which three were promising genotypes and (HC-1) was check. The promising genotypes were encoded GN-2, GN-13 and GN-7 respectively. Significant variation among the tested genotypes were observed in vegetative branches/plant, number of fruiting branch/plant, number of bolls per plant, single boll weight and seed cotton yield. The treatment were statistically similar for the traits node number of 1st fruiting branches per plant, days to 1st flowering days to 1st boll split and plant height. The genotype GN-13 showed highest amount of seed cotton yield (2617 kg/ha) and also showed highest GOT % (47.32 %).

Objectives:

Hill cotton is commercial fiber crop which is grown in the hill tract in Bangladesh. Hill cotton generally grown in Jhum system. As a result it compete for food, moisture, sunlight and air with other crops as result the yield of cotton is very poor. The production of cotton hampered due to the out crossing varietal degeneration and scarcity of land extension of corn cultivation is decreasing day by day due to lack of high yielding cotton variety. Efforts were being made to develop high yielding and short duration varieties through selection from the existing and collecting germplasm.

Methodology:

The experiment was laid out at Cotton Research Sub-Station, Matiranga, khagrachari during the season 2011-2012. Three selected genotypes were included in this experiment. The entries encoded as GN-2, GN-13 and GN-7 respectively. The experiment was laid out in Randomized complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replication. Selfed seeds of the genotypes were sown at 16 May 2011. The Unit plot size was (3 x 4) m and plant to plant and row to row distance were 30 cm and 60 cm respectively. Data were collected from middle two rows. Application of fertilizer was done as per general recommendation. All intercultural operation such as thinning, weeding, pest control, insects and diseases were under control trough proper care and management. Data were collected on the yield contributing characters from each plot which were analyzed through MSTAT-C program.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest single boll weight was observed in GN-13(5.25g) and lowest was in HC-1(2.60g).The highest number of boll per plant was produced by GN-7(21.92) and the lowest number of bolls was produced by HC-1(10.11). The highest fruiting branch per plant was found GN-7(13.98) and the lowest fruiting branch per plant was found HC-1(6.44). The treatment also showed significant different in vegetative branch. The lowest vegetative branch was found in GN-13(1.16). The highest ginning out turn(GOT%) was found in GN-13(47.32%) which was followed by GN-2(45.11) and GN-7(46.11). The lowest GOT% was observed in HC-1(41.42). The genotypes (GN-2), (GN-7) and (GN-13) produced higher amount of seed cotton in compare to local control. The treatment GN-13 produced the highest amount of seed cotton (2617 kg/ha) which was 78% more than the local control.
