Study on the Indigo Production in Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This experiment was carried out at Pirgachha Indigo processing center, Madhupur forest area, Tangail, Bangladesh during the period from April to August 2004. The electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids and power of hydrogen of different sources of water were analyzed in the laboratory. It was found that normal river water contained the highest pH value (8.2) and supply water contained the lowest pH value (7.3). Normally NaOH (caustic soda) is used for processing of Indigo and their effects on the above values of different sources of water were also investigated. When NaOH (caustic soda) solution was added with water its EC, TDS and pH values changed significantly. Electric Conductivity (EC), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and pH power (power hydrogen) values increased with increasing time. The solutions were alkaline. This experiment was conducted for 18 hours duration with one- hour interval. For field test, 4 processing units were selected. 0.04% NaOH solution was added to one processing unit that contained water and 400 kg raw materials (leaves and stems) and 1.961 kg Indigo was obtained. In other 3 processing units Indigo production was low due to smaller amount of NaOH solution was added and the corresponding values of pH were also low. The average yield of Indigo was 0.485 kg per 100 kg plants and leaves. The average yield of raw materials per acre was 3.5 tones (3500 kg). It was estimated that 1 kg of Indigo was obtained from 206 raw materials (plants and leaves together) and the average production of Indigo per acre was 17 kg. The cost benefit ratio of Indigo production was 1:4.055 and it is more than the conventional crops grown in Bangladesh.
