Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The physico-mechanical properties and spin ability of white jute called Dhobdhabey pat in comparison to the variety CVL-1 was studied. The fiber of Dhobdhobey pat was slightly finer than that of CVL-1 and its modulus was also higher. In case of whiteness, luster, breaking twist/unit length, breaking twist angle, spinning performance, i.e. ends down rate, yarn irregularity of Dhobdhobey pat had superior over CVL-1. But in regard to strength, extensibility, quality ratio, CVL-1 was better than Dhobdhobey pat exception only for finer yarn count (103 tex).

Objectives:

To determine the physico-mechanical and spin ability of Dhobdhobey pat.

Methodology:

Fiber sample of Dhobdhobey pat and CVL-1, 50 kg of each variety, were collected from Regional Station of BJRI at Manikgong during the season 1797-98. For sampling, 10kg of Dhobdhobey pat and CVL-1 were randomly separated from 2 lots, each of the remaining portions were kept for spinning of 103 tex (3 lbs/spy), 172 tex and 206 tex yarns. Fiber strength, fiber fineness, linear density, whiteness , brightness, fiber tensile strength, fiber torsion properties, breaking twist, yarn tensile properties, yarn irregularities and yarn ends down rate were measured for fiber characteristics and yarn properties in the standard atmosphere.

Achievement/Findings:

Whiteness and luster of Dhobdhobey pat was slightly higher than that of CVL-1 variety. The fiber of Dhobdhobey was finer and its breaking twist was higher than that of CVL-1, which was favorable for fine yarn spinning. The breaking twist angle of Dhobdhobey pat was lower than that of CVL-1. The co-efficient variation of fiber diameter of Dhobdhobey was lower compared to CVL-1, indicating the eveness of fiber Dhobdhobey which was helpful for fine yarn spinning. The fiber bundle strength, tenacity, extension at break was higher than those of Dhobdhobey pat. The yarn tenacity, load at break, extension at break, quality ratio, textile modulus of Dhobdhobey pat were found to be higher than those of CVL-1in case of fine yarn. The percentage of mean deviation of Dhobdhobey pat yarn was found to be lower and consequently their end down rate was also lower compared to CVL-1 yarn. The only one exception was observed in case of finer yarn of both Dhobdhobey pat and CVL-1, where ends down rate was found to be excessive.
