Development of Suitable Salinity Management Techniques and Their Environmental Impact Assessment on the Eco-system of Bangladesh: Salt Leaching and Productivity Improvement Option in Aman Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

For rainwater conservation, 15 cm levee were constructed around the plot. During land preparation about 340 mm and during the growing season of rice about 611 mm rainfall occurred and was sufficient for land preparation and to meet-up crop water requirement for rice, respectively in the Aman season. In 2000 Aman season there was no attack of insect-pests or any disease, and therefore no control measures were taken for growing rice. There was not much weeds in the rice field and only one weeding was done to control weeds. Both BR23 and BRRI dhan34 performed well despite of cyclonic storm In 2000. BRRI dhan34 suffered lodging due to cyclonic storm and for that yield was reduced than harvested in 1999. Average yield of BR23 and BRRI dhan34 were about 6.0 and 3.9 t/ha, respectively. Yield of local rice in the farmers’ field varied from 1.9 to 2.2 t/ha during the study period, average of which was 2.1 t/ha. Most of the local rice varieties suffered lodging and yield loss due to the cyclonic storm in 2000 at the time of flowering to grain filling stages.

Objectives:

To improve productivity in coastal area in Aman season

Methodology:

An experiment was set up in 2000 Aman season to determine the productivity of BR23 and BRRI dhan34 under rainfed condition in the coastal region. Topsoil salinity (0-15 cm) ranged from 2.4-5.1 dS/m during the Aman season and was not harmful for modern rice cultivation. As topsoil salinity remained within the acceptable limit of rice from July to December, transplanting was done about two weeks before the normal planting schedule of the farmers mostly to save crops from excessive attack of insect/pest. Recommended fertilizer rate and doses were used. About one-month old seedlings were transplanted on 5 August 2000 with the spacing of 20X20 cm for BR 23 and 20X15 cm for BRRI dhan34. Local rice variety, Jotai was cultivated by following the traditional farmers’ practice. Farmers’ seedlings aged 40-50 days were transplanted on the same day as done in modern rice varieties but without fertilizer and insecticide application. The respondent farmer himself managed the experimental plots.

Achievement/Findings:

BR23 showed resistance to lodging. Farmers showed their interest on BRRI dhan34 owing to its higher yield and grain yield, and BR23 for its higher yield and lodging resistance. Overall productivity of water was higher in BR23 followed by BRRI dhan34 and traditional rice varieties.
