Production of Fine Yarn by Blending (raw and Modified) Jute with Cotton Using Rotor Spinning Technology

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Raw and modified jute was blended with cotton and jute cotton blended yarns were manufactured mainly to take advantage of the lower price of jute fiber. For spinning jute cotton blended yarn jute fiber was mixed with cotton, cotton waste like flat strip, dropping, comber, noils etc. An assessment of the quality of the 14s count of yarns spun from the raw and chemical modified jute cotton blend was prepared in terms of their physical properties. Satisfactory spinning with 20:80 jute cotton in the blend was carried out on rotor machine of the spinning laboratory of the college of Textile Engineering and Technology, Dhaka. The result had compared with those of the cotton yarns. The yarns made from jute cotton blend in the ratio of 20:80 was found as good as the 100% cotton yarn.

Methodology:

Collected BWB and Bangladeshi cotton were chemically treated for dilignification using 1% NaCl, 1.5% acitic acid and 0.5% wetting agent at 80 degree C. after treatment washing were done using antichlored with it acitic acid. After chemical treatment physico-mechanical properties were studied. Yarn were produced using that treated fiber in the rotor spinning technology and yarns mechanical properties were studied. Jute fibers were blended with cotton manually in the ratio of jute: cotton=20:80.

Achievement/Findings:

Jute fiber were chemically treated to make them soft and improve inter fiber cohesion so as to make them suitable and compatible for blending with opened cotton. It was found that tenacity of modified jute cotton blended is less than 100% cotton yarn but higher than raw jute cotton blended yarn. other properties like breaking elongation, U%, thick and thin places/ km, neps/km, CSP etc of modified jute cotton blended yarn are inferior to 100% rotor spun cotton but better than those of raw jute –cotton blended rotor spun yarn. In this investigation it is observed that fine quality jute cotton blended yarn is possible to be spun by using rotor technology. From the analysis of the results it is seen that some properties of jute cotton blended yarn are closer to 100% cotton yarn.
