Development of Suitable Salinity Management Techniques and Their Environmental Impact Assessment on the Eco-system of Bangladesh: Salinity Management Techniques and Productivity Improvement in Dry Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In coastal saline area during dry season, top soil salinity in the fallow lands rose up to 15 dS/m and is considered harmful for crop production. For developing appropriate salinity management techniques and productivity improvement an experiment was carried out with four treatments i.e., fallow land, plowed land, raised bed and furrow. Top soil salinity was 12 ds/m in furrow land. Applied soil salinity management techniques considerably reduced salinity values.It was reduced 50%, 60% and 55% in plowed land, raised bed and furrow, respectively. Sesame, mungbean, kangkon and cowpea were grown in plowed land, raised bed and in furrow. Excessive rainfall occurred and crops were damaged. Moisture availability was a problem for crop production in the raised bed. but both germination and crop growth were favored in plowed land. Therefore normal plowing may be considered the best option for salinity management and favorable for dry season crop cultivation in absence of excessive rainfall.

Methodology:

In the dry season, top soil salinity in the fallow lands rose up to 15 dS/m and is considered harmful for crop production. For developing appropriate salinity management techniques and productivity improvement an experiment was set up at Kismot Fultola, Khulna in 1999-2000 dry season in randomized complete block design with three replications. The treatments were fallow land, plowed land, raised bed and furrow.

Achievement/Findings:

From results it was observed that salinity level of 0-15 cm soil layer was about 15 ds/m in fallow lands of the treatments plowed and raised bed, whereas it was 12 dS/m in furrow. The main reason of lower salinity in furrow , because furrows were prepared and cowpea were sown about one month earlier than crops established in plowed land and raised bed. In the plowed land, topsoil salinity was reduced to about 50% i.e., from 15 to 7.5 dS/m. In the raised bed, it was reduced to about 60% (from 15 to 6 dS/m). In furrow method about 55% (from 12 to 6.6 dS/m) reduction in topsoil salinity was observed in the dry season 1999-2000.
