Effect of Botanicals for the Management of Lac Predators, Eublemma Amabilis and Pseudohypatopa Pulverea in Field Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out at 15 years old ber orchard of Lac Research Station, Chapai Nawabganj during July to October 2012 following randomized complete block design (RCBD) with five treatments and three replications. Results indicated that neem seed kernel extract @ 10g crushed kernel/litre of water was found most effective reducing 83.35% Eublemma amabilis and 80.83% Pseudohypatopa pulverea population over control. The highest lac yield (6.35 kg/plant) was also obtained form this treatment.

Objectives:

To develop effective and safe management approach against predators attacking lac insects in the field.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in the ber orchard of Lac Research Station, Chapai Nawabgonj during July to October 2012 kartiki lac crop season. Five treatments were studied and each treatment was replicated thrice following RCB design. The treatments were as follows : T1= spraying of neem seed kernel extract @ 10g crushed kernel/litre of water, T2= spraying of mehogony seed extract @ 10g crushed seed/litre of water, T3= spraying of mehogony seed extract @ 20g crushed seed/litre of water, T4= spraying of neem oil @ 10ml /litre of water and T5= untreated control with water spray only. One ber plant around 15 years old was considered as one replication of a treatment. After settlement of the lac insects on young shoots, 10 cm length of 5 shoots taken from each replication and the number of nymphs were recorded separately at 10 days intervals up to crop harvest. After cell formation by the nymphs the population was enumerated on the estimated basis of the number of the cells on 10 cm length of 5 shoots taken from each replication. The yield of stick lac was recorded separately during harvest. Percent mortality of Lac insects was calculated on the basis of initial and final population data. Percent reduction of predator population was calculated over control treatment.
