Test and Evaluation of Irri Hydrotiller

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The hydrotiller is moving easily, cutting down and mulching he weeds such as water hyacinth. on a land having no plough pan or very weak plough pan upto 40 cm depth of soil. The fuel consumption and field capacity were 2.8 l/hr and 0.15 ha/hr, respectively which are in agreement with the IRRI test results. This field capacity is approximately the same as in conventional power tiller. The visual observation of the hydrotiller seemed to be stout in design. The cage wheel discs were disintegrated during the 200 hr test period. The actual speed of the hydrotiller in the field with 5 cm standing water was about 6 km/hr when left without gripping the handle. However, the working speed of the tiller was around 2 km/hr. The operator had to press the handle tightly downward to slow down the speed from 6 km/hr to 2 km/hr. So, the operator moved forward and gripped the handle using his body to reduce the speed. This makes discomfort and difficulty in operation to the operator. The hydrotiller worked quite well in the boggy soil where tractors and conventional tiller are not suitable.

Methodology:

The hydrotiller is a floating rototiller that can puddle the low lying fields uniformly with less number of operations and thus reduce the cost of cultivation. IRRI reported that it can also incorporate sesbania into soil upto a crop height of 2 meters. A test was conducted to determine the field performance of the hydrotiller in the BRRI farm. Fuel consumption, field capacity and working speed of the hydrotiller was evaluated in the boggy soil.

Achievement/Findings:

The IRRI hydrotiller may be recommended to use in wet land and boggy soil where tilling by animal or conventional power tiller is impossible. It will be suitable for use in the low lying areas of Bangladesh such as Habiganj, Barisal, Patuakhali, Comilla, Noakhali. Some of the teeth or lugs of the cage wheel were slightly bent probably due to the impact of the lugs on the metallic road during the transportation. The operator face some difficulties to control it due to its high speed. However, the following improvements on this design may make it more durable and acceptable to the farmers. i. The hydrotiller should have provision of road wheel attachment for quick transportation. ii. A speed controlling device should be incorporated. iii. The mudgurd should be enlarged sideways and to be extended upto the back end of the pontoon
