Research, Demonstration and Training on Rice Production, Postharvest Technology and Biomass Utilization Phase Ii (ptr-2 Project)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Demonstration and extension of agricultural technologies were carried out in the farmers field for three years through the PTR-2 project in Bangladesh. At kismat, number of rotary weeders increased from 19 (project supplied) to 36 after the project. Additional 17 weeder were bought by he farmers. Farmers reported that rotary weeder required less labor for weeding and use of rotary weeder makes soil soft and muddy. Moreover, it mixes weeds and fertilizer well with soil, that leads to luxuriant plant growth. Hand spraying with a broom was the common practice of spraying chemicals at both the project sites. Farmers found that knapsack sprayers are very advantageous. It was observed that farmers do not desire to buy a knapsack sprayer because of its high price. Farmers opined that pedal threshers can be used in rainy days and even females can operate it inside the house and grains are fully threshed. But farmers preferred traditional threshing to pedal threshing because of i) traditional threshing took less time and labor and easier than pedal threshing, ii) pedal threshers were not durable enough and iii) no nearby workshop was available for repair.

Objectives:

i) To diversify rice farming systems including biomass production, rice & fish culture and poultry bird vaccination; ii) To introduce hand weeder & insecticide sprayer for improved intercultural and plant protection operations; iii) To introduce improved threshing, winnowing, drying and milling technology in the project areas; iv) To introduce improved cattle feed such as urea-treated straw to supplement feed shortage; v) To developed a low cost biogas plant to supplement domestic energy need using cowdung, chopped straw and other agril. residues, and vi) To introduce improved stove ‘chula’ for reducing energy consumption in the villages.

Methodology:

Achievement/Findings:

The demonstration of project technologies in the two pilot sites (Sreepur and Mymensingh) has resulted in the wide adoption of modern variety (BR11 and BR14) and has increased yield in the last three years. Consequently farmers income as well as labour employment have increased. Furthermore, there was an increase in farmers’ knowledge of modern rice cultivation. The project has also shown that with efficient water management through lined irrigation canals, cropping can be intensified and diversified with concomitant increase in yield. A positive change in farmers’ attitude and behaviour towards modern farming have taken place. The team has established the necessary institutional linkages with local agencies and is confident that local institutions will sustain these activities after the end of the project.
