Performance of Quality and Health Status of Four Seed Classes of Jute Collected from Different Sources of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Hundred and fifty seed samples of white jute (Corchorus capsularis L.) belonging to four seed classes were collected from different sources of Bangladesh. The seed classes were breeder, foundation, certified and farmers’ seeds. Breeder seeds had the best performance in all the seed quality attributes as compared to foundation, certified and farmers’ seeds. The lowest performance was observed in farmers’ seeds. Seven different causal organisms of fungal disease Botryodiplodia theobromae, Colletotrichum corchori, Corynespora cassicola, Curvularia lunata, Fusarium moniliforme, F.semitectum and Macrophomina phaseolina were detected in seeds of all seed classes. All seed quality parameters were comparatively better in breeder seeds than foundation seeds. Certified seeds had better performance than farmers’ seeds. So, certified seeds should be used for fibre production at farm level. Therefore, proper care should be taken in the production and storage of certified seeds.

Objectives:

To evaluate seed quality of high yielding jute varieties collected from different sources of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

In all 150 seed samples of white jute (Corchorus capsularis L.) belonging four seed classes were collected from different sources in 2008. The Breeder seeds of CVL-1, CVE-3 and BJRI Deshi Pat-5 (BJC-7370) were obtained from Central Station of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI). The foundation seeds of the same varieties were collected from Chitla Farm and Nashipur Farm of BADC. The certified seeds were collected from the seed production zones of BADC viz. Dhaka, Bogra, Tangail, Jessore, Kushtia and Rajshahi. Farmer’s seeds were collected from the farmers of same six selected locations of BADC. Seed collection procedure was maintained following the Rules of ISTA . Seed quality and seed health tests were conducted in the Plant Pathology Laboratory of BJRI.The study was conducted following Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Data were analyzed statistically and means were compared by Duncans Multiple Range Test .

Achievement/Findings:

From this experiment it may be concluded that breeder and foundation seeds are produced and managed with close observation for certified seed production and possess better seed quality than that of certified and farmers seed classes. Farmers’ seed class invariably had the lowest germination percent with maximum prevalence of seed-borne infections as compared to other three seed classes. The certified seeds had better performance than farmers’ seeds and hence it is better to use this seed for fibre cultivation at farm level after ensuring that the certified seeds had stipulated seed quality. Therefore, proper care should be taken in production, processing, storage and marketing of certified seeds.
