Effect of Various Spacing and Fertilizer Levels on Yield of Hybrid Cotton

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at three Cotton Research Farm Sreepur, Jagadishpur and Sadarpur during kharif season in 2011-12 to determine the effect various spacing (90 cm × 45 cm, 75 cm × 30 cm and 60 cm × 30 cm) and fertilizer levels (0: 0: 0: 0, 90:39:98:20, 120: 52: 131: 27 and 150: 65: 164: 34 kg/ha) on yield of hybrid cotton. Combined analysis showed that, closer spacing of 60 cm × 30 cm and a higher fertilizer level of 150: 65:164: 34 kg/ha gave highest seed cotton yield (2143.90 and 2555.61 kg/ha respectively). The yield contributing parameters were significantly influenced by the various spacing and fertilizer levels. Interaction effect was highly significant on yield of seed cotton and yield contributing parameters. Economics analysis showed that plant spacing 60 cm × 30 cm with 150: 65:164: 34 kg NPKS/ha gave the highest gross margin Tk. 112924/ha and the lowest gross margin (3158 Tk./ha) and benefit cost ratio(1.07) were recorded from treatment T₁ (F₀×S₁), respectively.

Objectives:

The objective of this study was to optimize its spacing and fertilizer dose for higher yield in cotton

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Sreepur, Gazipur under AEZ No-28 (Madhupur Tract), Sadarpur, Dinajpur AEZ No. 25 (Level Barind Tract) and Jagadishpur, Jessore AEZ No. 11 (High Ganges River Flood Plain) during the kharif season of 2011-12. The status ofthe soil has been presented in Table-1. The 2-factor experiment was conducted in RCB design with three replications in all locations. The treatment combinations of the Factor A. Fertilizer doses (Kg/ha) NPKS (F₀= 0:0:0:0, F₁= 90:39:98:20, F₂= 120:52:131:27 and F₃= 150: 65:164: 34) and Factor B. Row spacing (S₁= 90 cm × 45 cm, S₂= 75 cm × 30 cm and S₃= 60 cm × 30 cm).The experiment was set up (second week in the month of July /2011) in a plot size 4.5m × 3.6m. Cotton variety Rupali-1 was used as a test material. Total amount of TSP, gypsum, zinc sulphate, magnesium sulphate, borax and one-third urea and one-third MoP were applied as basal. The rest of Urea and MoP were applied in three equal splits as top dressing at 25 DAS (Days After Sowing), 45 DAS and 65 DAS. There was 10 cm deep drain around the plot to drain out the excess rain water. All other production practices were as farm standard Yield data was recorded from middle rows and analyzed according to MSTAT.

Achievement/Findings:

Location effect was significant. The highest mean yield of seed cotton 2318 kg/ha was obtained from Sreepur and lowest seed cotton yield 1310 kg/ha was found in Sadarpur. . Yield and yield attributes of cotton were significant due to effect of NPKS. The highest plant height (110.83 cm) observed in F3 (150:65:164:34 kg/ha NPKS) and the lowest (65.68 cm) was in F0 (No fertilizer). Hence, NPKS fertilizer enhances plant height of cotton.The effect of plant spacing was found significant in plant height, number of sympodia/plant, number of monopodia/plant, number of bolls/plant, boll weight and seed cotton yield. The highest mean yield of seed cotton 2143.90 kg/ha was obtained from S3 where plant spacing in 60 cm × 30 cm and lowest seed cotton yield 1561.74 kg/ha was found in S1 (90 cm × 45 cm).
