Effect of Spacing and Fertilizer Management on the Yield and Yield Attributes of Mukhikachu

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the research field of Agronomy Division, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur, Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur and Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi during the kharif-1 season of 2012 to determine the optimum plant spacing and fertilizer dose for higher yield of mukhikachu. Three levels of spacing (60cm x 60cm, 60cm x 45cm and 60cm x 30cm) and three levels of fertilizer doses (Recommended dose, 25 % less than recommended dose and 25% higher than recommended dose) were used as treatment variables. Twenty five percent (25%) higher than recommended fertilizer dose with 60cm x 30cm spacing gave the highest edible yield (19.23 t/ha, 19.9 t/ha and 15.8 t/ha in Joydebpur, Jamalpur and Ishurdi, respectively) which was significantly higher than other treatment combinations. Recommended fertilizer dose (96-27-81-18 NPKS kg /ha) with 60cm x 30cm spacing and 25% higher than recommended dose with 60cm x 30cm spacing gave better yield and higher economic return of mukhikachu.

Objectives:

To determine the optimum plant spacing and dose of fertilizer for higher yield of Mukhikachu.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at Agronomy field of BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur, Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Jamalpur and RARS, Ishurdi of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute during Kharif season of 2012. Three levels of spacing i.e. 60cm x 60cm, 60cm x 45cm and 60cm x30cm and three levels of fertilizer dose i.e. recommended dose (96-27-81-18 NPKS kg /ha), 25 %less than recommended dose and 25% higher than recommended dose were used as treatment variables in the study. The trial was set up in RCB (Factorial) design with three replications. The unit plot size was 3.6 m x 3.6 m. Crop variety used in the experiment was BARI Mukhikachu-1(Bilashi). The crop was fertilized as per different treatments. Full amount of PKS was applied as basal. N was applied in two equal splits, one at 15-20 days after planting (DAP) and the other at 40-45 DAP. Seed cormels of mukhikachu were planted on 11 March, 2012 at Jamalpur, 12 March 2012 at Joydebpur and 30 March 2012 at Ishurdi and harvested at 12 December, 2012 at Jamalpur, 30 August 2012 at Joydebpur and 9 December 2012 at Ishurdi. Ten randomly selected plants were collected from each plot for recording yield contributing characters prior to harvest. The yield data was recorded from 12.96 m²area of each plot from which per hectare yield was calculated. All collected data were analyzed statistically and mean separation was done by LSD test.
