The study was conducted in Pirojpur and Bagherhat districts during 2004-05 to measure farm level production and utilization of golden apple and sapota. Both the fruits were produced in the house garden areas. The farmers used intensive family labor for the production of the fruits. The cost of except establishment year of a garden was found high and the cost of fruit production for other years was found minimum. The farmers got income from third year up to the death of the trees. The production of the fruits was found highly profitable to the farmers during the middle age of the garden. Farmers were facing some problems for producing and selling of fruits like damaged by birds, low price, insect infestation etc. The price of sapling should be reduced and quality sapling should be supplied to the farmers at the time of their needs.
Farm level, utilization, golden apple, sapota.
Pirojpur and Bagherhat district
i. To study the comparative yields and income of different fruits,
ii. To find out the utilization and disposal patterns of different fruits and
iii. To assess the related constraints of the fruits cultivation.
The study was conducted in two districts namely, Pirojpur and Bagherhat. Pirojpur area is suitable for golden apple cultivation and Bagherhat area is suitable for sapota cultivation. The list of the farmers under golden apple gardens of Kawkhahi upazila and sapota gardens of Mollarhat upazila were collected from the respective areas. A total of 112 samples taking 60 from Kawkhali and 52 from Mollarhat were selected randomly from the lists for interview. Data were collected by survey method from the sampled farmers with the help of pre-designed and pre-tested interview schedules during 2004-05. Both qualitative and qualitative data were analyzed through tabular methods using averages, percentages, ratios etc to achieve the objectives set for the study.
Annual Research Report 2005, Agricultural Economics Division, BARI, Gazipur
Golden apple is found a popular and delicious fruit in the study areas. The demand of sapota is also increasing day by day. The golden apple is growing in the southern part of Pirojpur and Jhalakati districts. Sapota is growing bagerhat, Jessore, Khulna and Satkhira districts. The farmers used intensive family labor for the production of the fruits. The average cost of establishment a golden apple garden was Tk 38528/ha and it was Tk 33445/ha for sapota garden. The farmers under golden apple gardens got the maximum yield within 6 t0 12 years of golden age. During this time, benefit cost ratio varied from 10.67 to 16.97. After 10 years of age, the garden started to decrease fruit production and size of fruits. But the farmers under sapota gardens got the maximum yield within 6 to 25 years of age. During this time benefit cost ratio varied from 11.26 to 20.44. After 25 years of age, the garden started to decrease fruit production. Farmers were facing some problems for producing and selling of fruits like damaged by birds, low price, insect infestation etc. The price of sapling should be reduced and quality sapling should be supplied to the farmers at the time of their needs.
