Effect of Tillage and Plant Population on Growth and Yield of Hybrid Maize

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at RARS Ishurdi and RARS Jamalpur during 2012-2013 to find out optimum tillage and planting technique for higher yield of hybrid maize and to reduce cultivation cost in maize production. The treatments were T1= Zero tillage/Dibling + One seed/hill, T2= Zero tillage/Dibling + two seed/hill, T3= Minimum tillage + One seed/hill, T4= Minimum tillage + two seed/hill, T5= Conventional tillage + One seed/hill, T6= Conventional tillage + two seed/hill. At Ishurdi, tillage and seeding technique did not show any significant influence on maize yield and it ranged from 10.90 to 11.89 t/ha in different treatments. But at Jamalpur, tillage and seeding technique showed significant influence on maize yield. The highest seed yield (10.40 t/ha) was obtained from T6 treatment while the lowest in T1. However, in both the locations minimum tillage with one seed/hill gave higher benefit cost ratio (1.38 and 2.09).

Objectives:

To find out the optimum tillage and planting technique for higher productivity of maize.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Ishurdi, Pabna and RARS, Jamalpur during 2012-2013 to find out optimum tillage and planting technique for higher yield of hybrid maize and to reduce cultivation cost in maize production. The experiment was laid out in a RCB design with three replications having the unit plot 5m × 4.2m. The treatments were T1= Zero tillage/Dibling + One seed/hill, T2= Zero tillage/Dibling + two seed/hill, T3= Minimum tillage + One seed/hill, T4= Minimum tillage + two seed/hill, T5= Conventional tillage + One seed/hill, T6= Conventional tillage + two seed/hill. The unit plot size was 5 m x 4.2m. Maize seeds were sown on 29 November 2012 and harvested on 2 May 2013. In zero tillage seeds were sown by making 2-3 cm depth furrow by using an iron made tine. For minimum tillage land was prepared by one pass of power tiller while three pass was used for conventional tillage. Fertilizer was applied @ 250-55-110-40-5-1.5 kg/ha of N-P-K-S-Zn-B. Half nitrogen and full amount of other fertilizers were applied as basal. Rest nitrogen was top dressed in two equal splits at 35 and 65 days after sowing. After establishment of seedlings, one seedling was uprooted from the hill to ensure the uniform plant population. Irrigation and other intercultural operations were applied as and when required. Ten plants were selected randomly at maturity stage to collect the data on yield attributes. Yield data were recorded leaving one border line from each end of the plot. Grain yield was calculated at 14% moisture content. Grain yield was also adjusted from missing hills following the standard formula. Collected data were analyzed statistically with the help of a computer based program MSTAT-C and mean separation was done at 5% level of significance following LSD test.

Achievement/Findings:
