A Study on Structural Compatibility of Jute with Man Made Textile Fiber Used in Jute Blends.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Blending is an up to-date technique of material science for obtaining desired properties in the end products has been proved to be immensely beneficial in textile field as well. This technique has also been applied in jute to diversify its end uses. To select proper component fiber for blending wuth jute, fiber characteristics along with how these fiber are complementary to jute in blends are required to be known. To meet these requirement, compatibility of different textile fiber with jute is to be studied, which is responsible for the ultimate physic-mechanical properties and performance characteristics of the blended products. BWB, BTB and blended jute were carried out in two different techniques following the conventional jute processing system for converting fiber into yarns of 5 and 7.5 counts. The fibers were characterized by microscopic, air flow and gravimetric method. Finally for types yarn’s quality and physic-mechanical properties were determined. From comparative study of the yarns quality and performances, blending technique “A’ i.e. lattice blending is found slightly better than the 2nd blending method ‘B’ i.e. stack blending.

Methodology:

First of all, BWB and BTB jute fiber were processed. After blending man-made fiber (acrylic and polyester) with jute were carried out in two different methods. In method A’ blending was attained by spreading the component fibers in desired proportions by weight over the breaker card lattice. In method ‘B’ jute and man-made fibers were laid on the floor in alternate layer in desired proportion by weight. Finally the physico-mechanical properties of the produced yarns were measured and analyzed for further processing.

Achievement/Findings:

The component of fiber blends, i.e. jute of two different grades (BWB and BTB), acrylic and polyester fiber were characterized. The control sample of 100% jute, each of BWB and BTB grade were processed through normal sequence of jute processing and yarn of 5 and 7.5 counts were spun. Trial processing of jute acrylic in 80:20 ratios was carried out following two different technique of blending. The quality and performance and physic-mechanical properties of the yarn were determined. Expected quality performances were displayed by the control yarns. From the study and analysis of the tensile properties and quality of the jute acrylic (80:20) yarns, blending processing ‘A’ seems to be better than ‘B’. Though the tensile strength, extension and quality ratio of yarn from the two process do not show much difference but from the yarn regularity point of view, the process ’B’ resulted in more irregular yarn, as it is evident from its higher values of strength CV%.
