Dormancy of rice seed varies from variety to variety and season to season. Seed viability period also depend on storage condition. So a study was conducted in Plant Physiology Division, BRRI, Gazipur to determine the dormancy and viability period of some Aus, Aman and Boro rice. Three varieties namely BRRI dhan45, BRRI dhan47, BRRI dhan50 for Boro season, 3 varieties namely, BRRI dhan42, BRRI dhan43, BRRI dhan48 for Aus Season and 5 varieties namely BRRI dhan40, BRRI dhan41, BRRI dhan44, BRRI dhan46 and BRRI dhan49 for Aman Season were used for this study. For dormancy test, germination test was done at the date of harvest and then at an interval of 7 days until the dormancy was broken. For viability test, when germination percent was 80% or above, seeds were preserved in different storage medium as polythene Packet, Motka and Refrigerator. These seeds were used for viability test. Highest dormancy period was observed in Aman season. BRRI dhan41 showed 74 days dormancy period. In Aus season, BRRI dhan48 showed highest dormant period 40 days whereas in Boro season, BRRI dhan45 showed the highest dormant period (29 days). The seeds stored in freeze condition exhibited long viability period followed by Polythene packet and Motka storage. Among all the varieties stored in Polythene packet and Motka, BRRI dhan48 showed highest viability up to 330 days.

  1. To determine the dormancy and viability period of some rice varieties in Boro, Aus and Aman seasons
  2. To study the effect of storage condition on seed viability.

Three varieties namely BRRI dhan45, BRRI dhan47, BRRI dhan50 in Boro season, 3 varieties namely, BRRI dhan42, BRRI dhan43, BRRI dhan48 in Aus Season and 5 varieties namely BRRI dhan40, BRRI dhan41, BRRI dhan44, BRRI dhan46 and BRRI dhan49 in Aman Season were grown in the field up to maturity using the normal cultural practices in the year 2008, 2009 and 2010 respectively. Seed were collected, sun dried at 12-12.5% moisture content. The collected seeds were preserved. These seeds were used for dormancy and Viability test. The viability test was done at an interval of 30 days beginning from the date of broken dormancy. This was in vitro (petridish) study conducted in 3-replicated CRD.

Seed dormancy: The seeds of all the varieties had high dormancy in Aman season, than that of Aus and Boro season. In Aman season, the seeds of BRRI dhan41 had high dormancy period (74 days) than that of other varieties. The range of dormancy period varied from 49 to 74 days in aman season. Compared to Aus and Boro season the weather during seed developmental stage of Aman Season crop was cooler, less humid and had low solar radiation. This could be the reason for longer seed dormant period of Aman crops compared to that of Aus and Boro season crops. In our previous findings we explained that the weather condition of the seed developmental stage of Aman crop is the reason of longer seed dormant period. In Aus season, BRRI dhan48 showed highest dormant period 40 days. In Boro season, BRRI dhan45 showed the highest dormant period (29 days) and BRRI dhan50 showed the lowest dormant period (16 days). Seed Viability: Seed viability period has been designated as the duration within which the percentage of germination is 80% or higher. Most of the varieties grown in Aus season exhibited long viability compared to Aman and Boro when the seeds were taken from polythene packet and Motka storage condition. But the seeds which were kept in refrigerator all seasons’ rice seeds showed long viability period. In Aus season BRRI dhan48 showed highest viability up to 330 days and 270 days incase of polythene packet storage and motka storage. BRRI dhan43 showed lowest viability up to 210 days incase of storage in motka. In freeze condition seeds showed almost 100% germination percentage. In Aman season crop all the varieties were viable up to 180 days incase of Polythene packet and Motka storage condition .BRRI dhan40, BRRI dhan41 and BRRI dhan44were viable up to 210 days in Polythene packet storage. All the varieties were in good viable condition in refrigeration. In Boro season BRRI dhan45 was viable up to 130 days in Motka storage but it lost viability after100 days incase of polythene packet storage. BRRI dhan47 and BRRI dhan50 were viable up to 130 days in polythene packet but BRRI dhan50 was viable only up to 70 days in Motka. Irrespective of seasons, seed viability largely depends on storage condition. High temperature and relative humidity reduces the viability period of the seeds. The seeds stored in freeze condition gave long viability period due to very low temperature.
