Manual weather station with twice data logging per 24 hours are unable to provide clear pictures of actual weather condition. Recent advances of numerous & sophisticated sensors and vast data loggers provide a wide range of automated weather stations with frequent data recording system. Automatic weather station (WatchDog 2900ET) can measure and record/log daily weather fluctuations more accurately than manual system, but the data of manual weather station can also be useful to some extent. The major advantage of this weather station is the recording of data at every half an hour and automated data storage in the logger which can be directly transferred and reported through a PC whereas in manual system we can get data twice in 24 hour time and are unable to track the continuous changes of weather elements.  Significant variation was observed by comparing major weather parameters when comparing the data taken by the two systems for a period of 5 month. The variations of weather parameters observed between manual and automatic weather station is mainly due to average of more data point for automatic station (48/day) and digital sensors that can measure and record fractions of changes compared to minimum data point (only 2/day) and the analog system of measurement in the manual weather station.

Close monitoring of weather elements like temperature (minimum, maximum and average), rainfall (total and periodic distribution), solar radiation (total and periodic), humidity (total and periodic), wind speed/gusts and direction etc.

An Automatic Weather Station ‘WatchDog 2900ET’ from Spectrum Technologies, USA was established in the BRRI HQ Gazipur on 12 February 2012 as per manufacturer’s guidelines. The Station can measures and logs- Air temperature, Relative humidity, Solar radiation, Rainfall, Dew point temperatures and Wind speed, gust and direction; and can calculate Evapo-transpiration, Degree days and Chill hours. The station can record and store a maximum of 8080 data point i.e. with 30 min. logging; it can log 183 days data (6 months data). After 6 months of establishment of WatchDog in BRRIHQ on August 13, 2012 all the recorded data were transferred into PC through professional software SpecPro9 and compared with manual weather station data and reported.

The weather elements measured and recorded by WatchDog 2900ET automatic weather station. Maximum and minimum air temperature was observed in the month of April 37.200C and March 15.30 0C respectively. Highest amount of rainfall and more number of rainy days was recorded in the month of July (385.20 mm and 29 days). Mean relative humidity for the reported period (Feb 12 to Aug 13, 2012) were ranged 43-98% in February and August 2012 respectively. Maximum global solar radiation was recorded as 986 Wat/m2 in April and August respectively. WatchDog can measure and record 3 parameters of wind to know the real situation of direction, speed and gustiness. The wind direction was measured as degrees, while the Anemometer was set as the direction in North, thus it can easily calculated by comparing the degrees. Maximum wind speed and gustiness was recorded as 6.9 and 25 km/h in July and April respectively. Dew point temperature was shown highly variable in March, but it was ranged from 4.1-27.30C in March and June respectively. The graphics presented here were generated by the supplied professional software SpecPro9 (Spectrum Technologies, USA), it also allow to prepare different types weather reports like Day Summary (by hours), Month Summary (by days), Year Summary (by months) and a special report NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association). The major advantage of this weather station is the recording of data at every half an hour and automated data storage in the logger which can be directly transferred and reported through a PC. Whereas in manual system we can get data twice in 24 hour time and are unable to track the continuous changes of weather elements. Automatic weather station WatchDog 2900ET measured and recorded major weather elements more accurately than manual weather station. Significant variation was observed by comparing major weather parameters when comparing the data taken by the two systems for a period of 5 month. The variations of weather parameters observed between manual and automatic weather station was mainly due to average of more data point for automatic station (48/day) and digital sensors that can measure and record fractions of changes compared to minimum data point (only 2/day) and the analog system of measurement in the manual weather station.
