Studies on the Physical Properties of Jute Scientific Grading

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Bangladesh is one of the largest jute producer and exporter countries in the world. Jute has been assorted into grades according to its quality for different uses. In our country grading is done by eye estimation and using conventional non-scientific method. So, confusion prevails in the market regarding the grading of jute. For proper use of raw jute in producing in certain product of definite quality in reasonable cost grading is an important factor. So, scientific grading is very important and necessary for avoiding the confusion that prevails in the market and for effective costing and quality product.The research work was conducted to develop a score card system for scientific grading of raw jute both tossa and white on the basis of objective measurement of essential physical properties. The samples were examined for measuring bundle strength, finenessn luster, cutting percentage were measured in the laboratory of the textile physics division, BJRI during 2003-2009. Finally jute grading were done on the basis of the collected data and a method of scorecard system for scientific grading was developed based on obtained results.

Objectives:

1.Studies on the intrinsic and extrinsic properties of jute to develop a method of scientific Grading.

2.To study the physical properties of jute for scientific grading.

Methodology:

Raw jute fibers were collected from different jute producing areas such as Rangpur, Naogaon, , Faridpur, Shariatpur, Chandpur, Kishoregong Jamalpur zone and different regional station of BJRI, different jute Mills of Chittagong zone. These samples were collected from the jute grower. To measure the bundle strength samples were combed and fibers were made suitable for carrying out the test. Fiber fineness, brightness and whiteness, cutting percentage were measured using air flow method, Photo volt meter and digital balance following standard methods respectively.
