Intercropping of Okra with Indian Spinach

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment on hybrid maize was carried out at the Research field of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, RARS Ishurdi and Jessore during kharif-1 season of 2012 to find out suitable okra population for intercropping with Indian spinach. The treatments were: T1= Sole Indian spinach (100 cm x 50 cm), T2= Indian spinach (100%) + 2 row okra 37% (60cm x 80 cm), T3= Indian spinach (100%) + 2 row okra 30% (60cm x 100 cm), T4 = Indian spinach (100%) + 2 row okra 15% (60cm x 200 cm), T5= Sole okra (50 cm x 40cm). Indian spinach yield was greatly influenced by okra population; with the increase of okra population Indian spinach yield reduced while okra yield increased. Although intercroping reduced spinach yield (2.35 to 32%), total productivity was increased due to addition of okra yield. Total productivity which is expressed in Indian spinach equivalent yield (ISEY) was increased due to intercropping over the locations. Higher ISEY was observed in T3 and T4 treatments over the locations and these treatments gave higher benefit cost ratio.

Objectives:

To find out the okra population suitable for intercropping with Indian spinach

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during Kharif-I season of 2012 at the research field of Agronomy Division, BARI, Gazipur. There were five treatments namely ; T1= Sole Indian spinach (100 cm x 50 cm), T2= Indian spinach (100%) + 2 row okra 37% (60cm x 80 cm), T3= Indian spinach (100%) + 2 row okra 30% (60cm x 100 cm), T4 = Indian spinach (100%) + 2 row okra 15% (60cm x 200 cm), T5= Sole okra (50 cm x 40cm) in the present study. The soil was silty clay loam in texture belonging to Chhiata series of Grey Terrace Soil. The trial was laid out in RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 4 m × 4 m. Indian spinach and okra were sown on March 15, 20 and 31, 2012, respectively at Joydebpur, Jessore and Ishurdi and on the following day okra seeds (Kridibid deros-1) were sown according to treatments at Joydebpur. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 120-24-80-20 kg/ha N, P, K and S as urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MOP) and gypsum for sole and intercrop Indian spinach. Half of N, ½ of K; and full dose of other fertilizers were applied as basal. Rest of N and K were top dressed at 10 and 25 DAT. For sole okra fertilizers were applied @ 120-40-80-20 kg/ha N, P, K and S. Half of N and full dose of fertilizers were applied as basal. Rest of N was top dressed at 21 and 35 DAS. First harvest of Indian spinach was done at 30 DAT and continued up to 120 DAT. First harvest of okra was done at 45 DAS and harvesting was continued up to 135 DAS. The yield components data of okra were collected from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot. Collected data were analyzed statistically and mean separation was done by LSD test. Indian spinach equivalent yield (ISEY) was calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

Indian spinach yield was greatly influenced by okra population; with the increase of okra population Indian spinach yield reduced while okra yield increased. Total productivity which is expressed in Indian spinach equivalent yield (ISEY) was increased due to intercropping over the locations. Higher ISEY was observed in T3 and T4 treatments over the locations and these treatments gave higher benefit cost ratio. Intercropping 2 row Okra (60 cm x 100 cm or 60 cm x 200 cm) between 100% Indian spinach (100 cm x 50 cm) would be economically feasible.
