Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The physico-chemical properties of 2 different types of pineapple fibers samples one Bangladeshi (PALF1) and other Indian (PALF 2) were studied. Bundle strength, brightness, whiteness, linear density, and other tensile properties like breaking load, extension, tenacity, modulus and toughness were determined. It was found that the characteristics of pineapple leaf fibers (PLAF1) are closer to that BWE jute fiber. This fiber may be blend with jute, cotton and other natural fibers for the production of the value added products.

Objectives:

1.To study the basic properties of leaves, sticks, seeds and fibers of jute, kenaf, mesta and those from other indigenous sources.

2.To determine quality of the fibers which are not commonly used but use in locally in our country.

3.To assess their potential as commercial fiber at best to cottage and handicraft industries and

4.To study the potential of the above mentioned fibers in blending with jute and to identify their possible uses.

Methodology:

Pine apple leaves were collected from Shakhipur, Tangil, These leaves were local Bangladeshi variety. At first the fiber were hammered slightly to separate the ultimate from the coarse bundle and to give the fiber a considerable length. Then the leaves were retted at BJRI pond for eight days. Fiber collected from retted pineapple leaves by hand. These fibers were washed and dried and collected for Physico-chemical properties. The chemical constituents such as alpha cellulose, lignin, pectin, ash content were measured by TAPPI method. The physical properties such as diameter, bundle strength, brightness, whiteness and linear density, tensile properties like breaking load, extension, tenacity, modulus and toughness of both leaves were studied and compared.

Achievement/Findings:

There is a correlation between length, width and thickness of the pineapple leaf. If length is higher, width and thickness is also higher. It is found that lignin (%) of PALF1 is higher than PALF2 but less than BWE jute. Alpha cellulose of PLAF1 is less than PALF2 but higher than BWE jute. The bundle strength of the PALF2 is higher than PALF1. PALF1 is finer compared to PALF2 but they are more irregular due to high value of CV%. PALF1 is more significantly more lustrous and whiter than PALF2 as well as BWE. Bundle strength and tenacity of PALF1 and PALF2 are more closer to the BWE. It is observed that PALF2 has better breaking extension compared to PALF1 but neither of the two is found to be as extensible as reported for PALF which is 2-6%. However, this fiber may be blend with jute, cotton and other natural fibers for the production of the value added products.
