Laboratory and Simulated Field Test of Ratox (bromadiolone), an Anticoagulant Rodenticide, on Bandicoot Rat, Bandicota Bengalensis

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted in the laboratory of Vertebrate Pest Division, BARI, Gazipur to know the effectiveness of Ratox 90.005%), an anticoagulant rodenticide against Bandicota bengalensis. Out of 5 male and 5 female rats, 4 male and 4 female rats died in the three days no-choice test, 5 male and 4 female rats died in the three days choice test and four male and five female rats died in out door rat enclosure test. Percent mortality of the bandicoot rat was 80%, 90% and 90% in three days no choice test, choice test and out door rat enclosure test, respectively.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effectiveness of Ratox 90.005%), an anticoagulant rodenticide against Bandicota bengalensis.

Methodology:

Bandicoot rats were collected by trapping from different research field of BAR, and transferred to the lab of VPD. The rats were kept in rearing cages. No-choice" and "Choice test": The "Choice" and "No choice" feeding tests were conducted in the laboratory using Ratox (Bromadiolone), an anticoagulant rodenticide, on Bandicoot rat, Bandicota bengalensis 10 acclimatized, adult rats (5 male and 5 female) for each experiment. In the "no choice" test, 25g Ratox bait was supplied in a food cup for 24 hours. In choice feeding" test, two food cups were provided to each animal, one cup containing 25g of ratox bait and the other containing 25g of plain wheat grains. Consumption of bait material or food and mortalities of the test rats were recorded every day. Simulated field test in outdoor rodent enclosure: Five pairs (mail and female) of healthy rats was released into each (8 X 6 m) of the six compartments of the outdoor rodent enclosure for simulated field experiment. Their average body weight was 166.5g. 50g Ratox and 50g rat food (prepared by vertebrate pest Division, BARI) were placed in each compartment per day, distributed equally in two places. The rodenticide was supplied for 3 days and rat food was provided for ten days. Daily observations were made to record the activity of the rats and their mortalities.

Achievement/Findings:

"No-choice" and "Choice test": Out of 5 male and 5 female rats exposed to the "no-choice" feeding test, 4 males and 4 females died within 5-10 days. The average bait consumption per rat per day was very small i.e. 0.39g only. The average mortality rate was 90% for both sexes. In the "Choice" feeding test, 4 male rats and 4 female rats died within 10-11 days. Simulated field test in outdoor rodent enclosure: Poison bait and rat food were taken by test rats into the burrows within 24 hours of bait application. No reduction of burrowing activity was found before the 3rd day of application. The activity of 4 rats was stopped on the 3rd day of application. On sixth day, the activity of 2 rats was stopped and they were dead. The activity of female rat continued up to 10th day and was stopped on the 11th day of bait application. In this experiment, mortality of the rat was recorded 90%. It can be concluded that ratox is an effective rodenticide and it can be successfully used for controlling field rodents in this country.
