Development of Best Management Practices of Prawn (macrobrachium Rosenbergii) with Tilapia (oreochromis Sp.) and Other Species.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Average survival of galda and tilapia was 62.0±3.65 and 73.0±4.25 %, respectively. Average final weight of galda and tilapia was 80.0±5.28 and 200.0±15.20 g, respectively. The production of galda and tilapia as obtained in ponds was 1,100.6±80.20 and 914.7±55.35 kg/ha, respectively. The combined production of galda and tilapia was 2,015.3±65.42 kg/ha. It is therefore implied that integrated farming of galda and tilapia with a stocking density of 35,000/ha at a ratio of 2.5 galda and 1.0 tilapia would be environment friendly, economically viable and socially acceptable in the coastal areas of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To develop a suitable farming practices of prawn-tilapia and other fin fishes in coastal environment; to enhance prawn and tilapia or other fin fishes production through optimum utilization of the resources.

Methodology:

The ponds were dried and powder lime (CaCO₃) was broadcasted over the bottom at the rate of 250 kg/ha. The ponds were then filled with tidal water gradually up to a depth of 0.60-0.85 m from the nearby tidal canal through screen net. All unwanted animals of water were eliminated applying quickphos tablet at the rate of 2-3 tablet/40 m² of water. After 5 days of tablet applying, lime was again used at the rate of 125 kg/ha for neutralizing the chemical action of tablets. Nylon net was used to fence on the dikes around the ponds to prevent prawn escape and also to prohibit the disease bearing fauna from outside. All ponds then fertilized with organic fertilizers such as auto rice bran, molasses and yeast at the rate of 50 kg, 25 kg and 250 tea spoonfuls/ha, respectively which were soaked into water for 24 hours and applied the extract to all ponds. The same procedure was continued for three days. After 4-5 days, the water colour turned to green and ponds were stocked with juvenile freshwater prawn/galda and mono-sex tilapia according to the experimental design. Male galda juveniles (2.0 g) were stocked in all the ponds on April 16, 2011. Fry of mono-sex tilapia (1.0 g) were stocked on May 02, 2011. Galda were fed with Saudi-Bangla special feed (grower) @ 10~3 % of total biomass and tilapia were fed with locally formulated feed (approx. 45% rice bran, 22% wheat flour, 25% fish meal, 5% maize flour, 2% yester crust, 1% vitamin, etc) twice daily @ 100% of the total biomass in 1st week, 50% in 2nd week, 20-25 % in 3rd week. After then, tilapia were fed with feed @ 5~3% of body weight.

Achievement/Findings:

Best management practices in brackishwater aquaculture system will increase production of prawn and other fin fishes to reduce the risk of disease out break. Moreover, it will generate better income for coastal people; and improve livelihood of coastal people.
