Calibration and Standardization of the Sonic Fineness Tester.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

For blending jute with other fiber similarities of fineness is necessary. But there is no suitable way in BJRI by which researcher can easily measure the fineness of jute fiber within short time accurately. Unfortunately, sonic fineness tester in BJRI is used to measure the fineness of wool within very short time not for jute. For this reason, sonic fineness tester was calibrated and standardized to measure the fineness of jute fiber. In order to standardize this machine for testing the fineness of the jute fiber of two varieties were measured by both Air flow method and sonic fineness tester and their calibration chart were made. So, anyone can easily determine the fineness (in micron) for both white and tossa using sonic fineness tester with the help of calibration chart.

Objectives:

To calibrate and standardize the sonic fastness tester for jute fiber.

Methodology:

For fineness measurement of both white and tossa jute fiber specimen were prepared as 2.5gm by cutting fiber of 7cm length. The fineness was measured by both air flow method and sonic fineness tester in micron and milivolt respectively. After that, two calibration chart were made, one for white jute and another for tossa jute fiber.

Achievement/Findings:

Fineness of both white and tossa jute fiber were measured by both air flow method and sonic fineness tester in micron and milivolt respectively. After that, two calibration charts were made, one for white jute and another for tossa jute fiber. Finally, micronaire values were plotted vs. sonic values for both white and tossa jute and correlation was found. So, anyone can easily determine the fineness (in micron) for both white and tossa using sonic fineness tester with the help of calibration chart.
