The root damage by no. was the highest (48.11%) in plots having earthing up after 30 days of planting while it was 11.36% and 5.04% in plots having carthing up after 30 and 45 days of planting, and plots having earthing up after 30, 45 and 60 days of planting, respectively. In the untreated control plots the root damage by no. went up to 78.65% . The performance of four treatments significantly differed; the root damage by weight followed the similar trend. Therefore, with the increase in the number of earthing up the rate of weevil infestation declined. This method of weevil control is eco-friendly and cheaper than insecticides.
CONTROL, SWEET POTATO, WEEVIL
Pest Management
To find out the effect of earthing up at certain intervals in controlling the sweet potato weevil
An experiment was set up in the experimental field of TCRC, BARI following the Randomized Complete Block Design with 4 replications. Each unit plot was 3.6X3.0m. The spacing between row to row and plant to plant was 60 cm and 30 cm, respectively. The variety Kamla Sundari was used for the study. Fertilizers were used as per recommended doses (Urea 140 kg/ha, TSP 100 kg/ha and Mp 150 kg/ha). The treatments were: earthing up after 30 days of planting, earthing up after 30 and 45 days of planting, earthing up after 45 and 60 days of planting and earthing up after 30, 45 and 60 days of planting. There was an untreated control. The crop was planted on 5.12 2001. At harvest the following data were collected: percentage of root (marketable) damage by number and weight, and yield of infested and non-infested roots. Percent data were transformed to square root values prior to analysis.
