Effect of Sowing Dates on Yield and Yield Attributes of Tossa Jute (o-795) in Different Locations of Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted during 2006 to 2008 at two Research Stations of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) to optimize the time of sowing seeds for higher fibre yield. The treatment consisted of two locations, namely, JAES, Manikganj; RS, Faridpur; and three different dates viz., 1 March; 7 March and 14 March. The newly released variety O-795 was used as study material and recommended cultivar O-72 as control. Results revealed that fibre yield differed significantly due to date of sowing. The highest fibre and stick yields were recorded at 14 March sowing. Significantly higher base diameter, fibre yield were produced by O-795 than the variety O-72. Interaction effect of location x date of sowing showed significantly highest plant height, fibre yield and stick yield with 14 March sowing at Manikganj. The highest fibre and stick yields were also recorded at 14 March sowing at Faridpur. Significantly higher base diameter, fibre yield were produced by O-795 than the variety O-72. Comparatively the highest yields were observed at Manikgan than Faridpur

Objectives:

To ascertain the appropriate date of sowing for the advanced breeding line of tossa jute (O-795), the experiment was carried out in different agro-ecological zones of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during 2006 to 2008 at two Research Stations of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI). The treatments comprises two locations, namely, L₁ = Jute Agricultural Experimental Station (JAES), Manikganj; L₂ = Regional Research Station, Faridpur; and three different dates viz., 1 March (T₁); 7 March (T₂) and 14 March (T₃). The newly released variety O-795 (V₁) was used as study material and recommended cultivar O-72 (V₂) was the control. When experiment was running at the field O-795 was known as Advanced Breeding Line. But, now it is a newly released variety. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The cultural practices were followed as per recommendation of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI). Seeds were collected from breeding division of BJRI. Intercultural operations such as weeding, thinning, irrigation and other cultural management were done as and when necessary. The crops were harvested at field duration of 120 days in each location. Three years average data of fibre yield and yield attributing characters were analyzed with the help of computer statistical package (MSTAT). The mean differences among the treatments were adjusted by least significant difference (LSD) test at 0.01 level (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

Maximum and optimum yields were produced of the newly released variety O-795 crop sown on 14 March.e recorded at 14 March sowing. Significantly higher base diameter, fibre yield were produced by O-795 than the variety O-72. The highest fibre yield was observed at Manikganj. The interaction effect of location x date of sowing showed significantly highest plant height, fibre yield and stick yield with 14 March sowing at Manikganj.
