Thirty two potato varieties were evaluated against late blight disease of potato under field condition at Joydebpur, Gazipur. Out of 32 varieties only one variety Red fantasy showed highly resistant and 6 varieties showed moderately resistant to the disease and rest 25 showed susceptible reaction to the disease under present expreimental conditions. Twelve CIP clones were also evaluated against late blight disease of potato under field condition at three lacations namely, Bogra, Jamalpur and Munshiganj. Out of 12 clones tested, 4 showed moderately susceptible and rest 8 showed susceptible reaction to the disease under present experimental conditions. Incase of artificial screening, 23 exotic variety and 15 CIP clones were evaluated against late blight disease of potato through detached leaf method at BSPC Laboratory, Debiganj. Among them, all were susceptible to highly susceptible reaction to late blight under Bangladesh environment.

To find out resistant source(s) if any in the newly introduced potato varieties/CIP clones against late blight disease
In case of field screening, the experiment was conducted at Joydebpur; Gazipur by planting 30 newly introduced exotic potato varieties and variety Diamant was used as check in two trials. The tubers of each variety were sown in replicated (3 replications) plots on December 2007 at Joydebpur, In case of CIP LB clones. 12 clones were included in the study at three locations namely, Bogra, Jamalpur and Munshiganj. Recommended doses of fertilizers (N; P2O5;K2O:S @ 160:100:160:20 Kg/ha) were applied. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. No fungicide was used in the trials. Late blight data were taken on percent foliage infection visually under natural field trial. The crop was harvested on 5 March 2008. Data were analyzed statistically. In case of artificial screening, the experiment was conducted at BSPC, Debiganj with 23 exotic potato varieties and 15 CIP sate blight resistant lines and tested with sporangial suspension of P. infestans. Detached leaf method was followed where five leaflets were taken from each line. The leaflets were placed upside down in the screening trays. One drop of freshly prepared sporangial suspension was placed at the centre of each leaflet and then incubated at 15 + 40C for 5 days. Data were taken on lesion initiation hour, lesion diameter, presence of vegetative growth of the fungus and finally graded.
