Studies on the Genetic Diversity of Maize (set Iii)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fifty CIMMYT (India) Maize inbred lines were characterized based on some morphological traits and grain yield. Maximum variation was found in number of grains per row grain yield/plant (g), cob length (cm), ear height (cm), plant height (cm) and 1000 grain weight. On the basis of D² analysis, 50 inbred lines were grouped into 5 clusters. The inter cluster D²values varied from 2.75 to 12.37 exhibited medium range of diversity presence in the inbred lines. It is expected that crossing of inbred lines belonging high to medium D² values tend to produce high heterosis for yield. Selfed seeds for each of the inbreds were maintained for future study.

Objectives:

In order to achieve more heterotic partners from maize inbred lines, 50 CIMMYT (India) inbreds were characterized for their morphological traits and kernel yield. Selfed seeds for each of the inbreds line also maintained for future breeding works.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at Joydebpur with 50 exotic inbred lines received from CIMMYT, India. Seeds were sown on December 06, 2010. Unit plot size was 1 row 5 m long for each inbred maintaining 100 cm and 20 cm spacing between rows and hills, respectively. After thinning one healthy plant was kept in each hill. During vegetative growth stage intercultural operations were done at appropriate time according to the necessity. Data were recorded according to maize descriptor during vegetative, flowering, harvesting and post harvesting periods. At flowering stage, healthy and disease free plants were selected and also selfed by hand for maintenance of desirable lines.
