Mango Marketing and Processing System in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was undertaken in three important mango growing areas namely, Dinajpur, Chapai Nwabjong and Meherpur districts during 2005-06 to identify the marketing channels of fresh mango and processed products, the existing different processed products, use of packages and their utilization pattern, estimate costs, margins and price spreads of different products as different levels of intermediaries, examine the techniques used in processing company and identify the major constraints during marketing and processing. Total thirty farmers were selected randomly taking 10 farmers from each district. Ten major marketing channels were identified as dominant. The per quintal marketing cost of mango by farmer was Tk.133.42. Among the items, transportation cost incurred the major share which was about 45 percent. Beparies purchased mango from farmers/Bairals through local Aratdar and sold it to Retailer through Urban Aratdar. Their average marketing cost was Tk 446.03. On the average the farmers in the study areas received Tk.2379 per quintal of mango. Average price per quintal of mango was found highest in Dinajpur (Tk 2698) followed by Nawabgonj (Tk 2234) and Meherpur (Tk 2038). Inadequate transport facility, inadequate storage facility and higher cost of transportation were the major constraints to mango marketing.

Objectives:

v. To identify the major constraints during marketing and processing.

Methodology:

Three important mango growing areas namely, Dinajpur, Chapai Nwabjong and Meherpur. districts were selected for the present study. Within the districts, Dinajpur thana of Dinajpur, Meherpur thana of Meherpur, Subgonj thana Chapai Nwabgonj were purpositvely selected for the study. The sample of the study were the selected mango farmers, market intermediaries, processors and users of mango. From the selected villages, a list of farmers of mango growers was prepared. Total thirty farmers were selected randomly taking 10 farmers from each district. A list of Bairals was prepared from the selected areas a total of fifteen Bairals were selected randomly taking 5 Bairals randomly from each district. A total number of 45 intermediaries were selected for the study. Out of 45 intermediaries 15 were Beparies, 15 were Aratdar (Local), 5 were Aratdar (Dhaka) 10 Retailers. Data were collected during the period of June to August 2005.

Beparies purchased mango from farmers/Bairals through local Aratdar and sold it to Retailer through Urban Aratdar. Their average marketing cost was Tk 446.03. Their gross marketing margin and net marketing margin was Tk 1037 and Tk 590.97 respectively for transacting one quintal of mango. Retailer purchased mango from Beparis through urban Aratdar and sold it to the consumers. Their gross marketing margin and net marketing was about Tk. 498 and Tk.260.93 respectively. On the average the farmers in the study areas received Tk.2379 per quintal of mango. Average price per quintal of mango was found highest in Dinajpur (Tk 2698) followed by Nawabgonj (Tk 2234) and Meherpur (Tk 2038). Inadequate transport facility, inadequate storage facility and higher cost of transportation were the major constraints to mango marketing.
