Survey and Monitoring of Major Insect Pest of Aroids

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This experiment was conducted in four locations of Bangladesh for monitoring of major insect pest and their natural enemies of aroid during March-April, 2008. Farmer’s perception on percent of infestation status, control procedure, insecticide use status and yield of aroid crop was studied. Red mite was the key pest in all locations, than population of leaf roller was alarming in Joypurhat but spodoptera larva was uprising both in Jessore and Meherpur. The highest amount of pesticide use and other cost were involved in Jessore as well as the highest yield of aroid was recorded in Jessore which was 26.39 t/ha. From this experiment, it was observed that aroid was attacked by a number of insect and mite. Among them, red mite, spodoptera larva, leaf hopper and leaf roller were recorded as major pests.

Objectives:

To know the pest status of aroid

Methodology:

Survey was carried out in four locations of Bangladesh, namely Jessore, Joydebpur, Joypurhat and Meherpur during March-April, 2008. Studies were undertaken to know the farmers idea on percent of infestation status due to insect pest during crop period, cost involvement in pesticide use, other cost involvement, status of different control procedure and crop yield perception. A total of 120 randomly selected aroid grower farmers, 30 from each location, were interviewed with objective oriented questionnaire. Another study was done by using in-situ data collection. In each location 10 randomly selected plants with 3 replications were considered. Data for red mite was recorded as 2 leaves/plant by using magnifying glass, but data for other insect and natural enemies recorded from whole plant.
