Effect of Curing on Postharvest Quality of Summer Onion

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To evaluate the effect of curing on the postharvest quality of summer onion, the harvested onion bulbs were used for different methods of curing viz. control (T1), drying in the sun shine with leaves for 7 days (T2), drying in the air for 7 days (T3) and drying in the hot air flow for 7 days maintaining the temperature abound 38°C (T4). The bulbs were stored in well ventilated plastic shelves on 3rd week of August 2006 and continued for 75 days. Results reveled that rotting and total loss in weight during storage increased with duration of storage period. The lowest percentage of loss in weight (19.81%) and rotting (17.89%) were recorded in bulbs cured in the hot air flow for 7 days followed by the bulbs cured in sun shine, air and shade respectively.

Methodology:

Onion bulbs cv. BARI-2 was collected from Spices Research Centre (SRC) Bogra. The crop was grown with standard recommended method. Mature bulbs were harvested when 80% of the plants had flopped over (Brewster, 1982). Uniform bulbs were selected and cured with roots and leaves. The treatments of the experiment comprised four methods of curing viz. control (T1), drying in the sun shine with leaves for 7 days (T2), drying in the air for 7 days (T3) and drying in the hot air flow for 7 days maintaining the temperature abound 38°C (T4). Each treatment was replicated thrice. In each replication 2 kg onion bulbs were stored in well ventilated plastic shelves on 3rd week of August 2006 and continued for 75 days. The bulbs in the stored were frequently visited and data were recorded every week. The data were analyzed statistically and the treatments were evaluated by ANOVA test and the mean separation was done by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

Curing method had positive effects on postharvest quality of summer onion. It improved the colour development of the skin.Storage loss of summer onion possible to reduce significantly if the onion bulbs were cure under the hot air (38°C) air flow for 7 days or cure the onion bulbs in the sun shine for 7 bays.
