Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted at Bangladesh Forest Research Institute (BFRI) for formulation of poultry feed using rubber seed kernel (RSK). Nutritive value and proximate composition of seed kernel were determined. Four iso-caloric and iso-nitrogenous rations were formulated using the locally available feed ingredients and 0, 5, 10 and 15% RSM. Feeding trial experiment was conducted using formulated feed with six hundred numbers day old broiler chicks at starter, grower and finisher level. The chicks were randomly distributed in four treatment group having three replications per treatment and each replication contained 50 birds. Feed intake, growth rate and mortality rate were determined after one week interval. The experiment was continued for 42 days. Considering feed intake, body weight and mortality rate of the experimental chicks, it was found that RSK can be used as substitute to diet ration up to a level of 5%.

Objectives:

To assess the suitability of rubber seed as poultry feed.

Methodology:

Rubber seeds were obtained from a rubber plantation. Then seeds were de hulled and seeds kernel were separated from seed coat. Seed kernel later dried in the oven for over night at 50°C. The seeds kernels were milled using seed grinder. The prepared rubber seed kernel (RSK) was stored in a dry cool place. Six hundred day old Kasilla Hub Chix Strain of broilers was used in the trial at private poultry farm adjacent to CVASU to carry out the experiments. The chicks were randomly distributed in four treatment groups having three replications per treatment. Each replication contained 50 chicks. A bamboo house (30 x 15 x 9 cft) was divided by wire net into twelve compartments to maintain desired replication. The chicks were brooded in respective pens at a temperature of 95-90°F during first week, 90-85°F during the second week and 85-80°F during the third week with the help of clear 100W bulb for maintaining proper temperature during that period. The chicks were vaccinated against New castle and Gumboro disease. Locally available poultry feed ingredients were brought from market. Four iso-caloric and iso-nitrogenous rations were formulated for four treatment (T₁, T₂, T₃, T₄) where RSK were added as 0, 5, 10, 15 percent in each group at starter, grower and finisher level respectively. The feed ingredients used in formulated experimental diets were analyzed to determine their proximate components as per AOAC (1990). Starter Ration was fed from 0-7 days, grower ration from 8-21 ¬days and finisher ration from 22 days to older chicks. The experiment was conducted for 42 days. Live weight and feed intake of the experimental chicks were recorded weekly. Mortality of chicks was recorded daily. Carcass quality of the slaughter chicks were also investigated.

Achievement/Findings:

Rubber seed kernel (RSK) can be incorporated to conventional poultry feed ingredients at 5% level. A pilot plant poultry feed production farm can be installed by the private entrepreneurs or BFIDC adjacent to rubber garden.
