Performance of Turnip Varieties Harvested at Different Stages of Maturity

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment with ten varieties of turnip was Conducted at the Mango Research Station, Nawabganj with a view to find out the optimum time of harvest for maximum yield of good quality roots. The results showed that turnip should be harvested, within 60 day of sowing for obtaining higher yield of good quaility roots. The variety Golden Ball gave the highest yield of good quality roots when grown for 60 days.

Objectives:

To find out the potimum time of harvest for maximum yield of good quality turnip roots.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Mango Research Station, Nawabganj with ten turnip varieties. Thera were four dates of hervest: 45, 60, 75 and 90 days after sowing to represent four stages of maturity. Thus there were forty treatments. The treatments were arranged in a factorial randomized complete black design with two replications. Each replication consisted of 40 rows of 7.5m length. Each date of harvest occupied a single row within each replication. The seeds were sown thickly in lines with a row spacing of 30 cm. Farm yard manure at the rate 10.0 t/ha and nutrients at the rates of 69 kg N, 60 kg P2O5 and 105 kg k20 per hectare were applied~through urea, triple superphosphate and muriate of potash, respectively. Full dose of FYM triple superphosphate and 50 percent urea and muriate of potash were applied as basal while the remaining 50 percent urea and muriate of potash were applied as side dressing one month after sowing. After emergence, the seedlings were thinned and a second thinning was done 20 days later allowing a spacing of 15 cm between plants. Intercultural operations, such as, weeding, mulching, irrigation and insecticide spraying were done as and when necessary. Harvesting was started on 8 December, 1985 and continued according to schedule up to 22 January, 1986.

Achievement/Findings:

The varieties differed significantly in respect of all the characters studied except diameter of root. The results showed that turnip should be harvested, within 60 day of sowing for obtaining higher yield of good quaility roots. The variety Golden Ball gave the highest yield of good quality roots when grown for 60 days.
