Identification and Performance Evaluation of Weeds Grown in Deshi Jute Growing Areas.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Manikganj, Kishoreganj and Comilla in 2010. It was laid out in RCBD with three replications having three deshi jute varieties viz., CVL-1, BJC-83 and BJC-2142 were used as study materials. Treatments were three levels of locations viz., Manikganj, Kishoreganj and Comilla, and two levels of weeding stage viz., 1st weeding at 20 days after sowing (DAS) and 2nd weeding at 50 DAS. Results showed that twelve different weed species viz., Khude shama (Echinochloa colonum), Mutha (Cyperus rotundus), Durba (Cynodon dactylon), Fuska Begun (Physalis heterophylla), Gitlaghas (Paspallum distichum), Boro dodhia (Euphorbia hirta), Suto Dodhia (Euphorbia micropholla), Chapra (Eleusine indica), Hajardana (Phyllanthus niruri) Anguli (Digitaria sanguinalis), Angta (Panicum repens) and Boro shama (Echinochloa crussgalli) belonging to four families were found to infest the experimental plot. Of these species, 7 belonged to Gramineae, 3 Euphorbiaceae, 1 Solanaceae and 1 Cyperaceae . Among them at Manikganj was grown 10 type species but Fuska begun was densely infested, Kishoreganj 5 type where Mutha was highly infested and Comilla 5 type major species of weeds and Khude shama was densely infested. Results also showed that at the time of 2nd weeding it was more infested than 1st weeding.

Objectives:

1. To identify different type of weeds grown in deshi jute growing areas of Bangladesh.

2. To optimize cost of production of jute, kenaf and mesta crops, fibre and seed through manipulation of agronomic practices viz., crop combination, land preparation, weeding, thinning, stage of harvest, fertilizer application etc.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Manikganj (AEZ 7), Kishoreganj (AEZ 9) Comilla (AEZ 19) in 2009. It was laid out in RCBD with three replications having three deshi jute varieties viz., CVL-1, BJC-83 and BJC-2142 were used as study materials. Treatments were three levels of locations viz., Manikganj, Kishoreganj and Comilla, and two levels of weeding stage viz., 1st weeding at 20 days after sowing (DAS) and 2nd weeding at 50 DAS. Unit plot size were 4.0m x 2.5m. Space between plot to plot and around the field 1.0m and between replications 1.5m. were maintained. Seed was sown in line of 30 cm apart. Other standard cultural and intercultural practices were followed. The crop was sown on last week of March and harvested at field duration of 120 days in each location. Data of weed density was collected from each plot at 20 DAS as 1st weeding and 50 DAS as 2nd weeding by using 1m X 1m quadrant as per method. Quadrant was placed at three spots randomly in each unit plot. In each spot, all weeds inside the quadrant were counted species wise and their average values were taken as the weed population/sq.m. After counting weeds in each quadrant and completed washing species wise fresh weight was taken. Average weight of each weed species was expressed in g/sq.m.
