A field experiment was conducted at BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during kharif-1 season of 2012 to identify the critical growth stage for waterlogging and selection of suitable maize variety which would be capable to tolerate waterlogging stress. Treatments consisted of five levels of waterlogging stress; W0= No waterlogged (control), W1= waterlogging at 4 leaf stage, W2= waterlogging at 8 leaf stage, W3= waterlogging in between tasseling and silking stage and W4= waterlogging at grain filling stage and nine varieties of maize, viz. V1=BARI Hybrid maize-5, V2= BARI Hybrid maize-7 V3= BARI Hybrid maize-8, V4= BARI Hybrid maize-9 V5= Pacific-11, V6=NK-40, V7=C-555 V8=C-1921 and V9=C-6485. The interaction effect of waterlogging stress and different varieties of maize showed significant influence on growth, yield contribution characters, grain and stover yield. The maximum plant height, higher leaf area index (LAI), total dry matter (TDM) and chlorophyll content were observed in no waterlog treatment compared to other treatments which reflected on grain yield of maize varieties. The highest grain yield (7.91 t/ha) was obtained from C-1921 (V8) where no waterlogging was imposed and the lowest (2.10 t/ha) was observed in BARI Hybried maize-9 (V4) where waterlogging imposed in between tasseling and silking stage (W3). Among the varieties V8, V7 and V6 performed better when waterlogging imposed at grain filling stage (W4)

To find out  waterlogging stress tolerant maize varieties and sensitive growth stages for waterlogged stress.

The experiment was conducted at the research field of Agronomy Division, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during the kharif season of 2012. The treatments consisted of five levels of waterlogging stress; W0= No waterlogged (control), W1= waterlogging at 4 leaf stage, W2= waterlogging at 8 leaf stage, W3= waterlogging in between tasseling and silking stage and W4= waterlogging at grain filling stage and nine varieties of maize, viz. V1= BARI Hybrid maize-5, V2= BARI Hybrid maize-7 V3= BARI Hybrid maize-8, V4= BARI Hybrid maize-9 V5= Pacific-11, V6=NK-40, V7=C-555 V8=C-1921 and V9=C-6485. The treatments were arranged factorial in randomized complete block design with three replications. Each treatment within a plot consisted of nine rows of 3.0 meter long and maintained the spacing of 60 cm x 20 cm. The unit plot size was 5.4 x 3.0m (16-2m2). Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 250-50-100-40-5 kg-1/ha of NPKSZnB as urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), murate of potash (MOP), gypsum zinc sulphate and boric acid. One third of N and all other fertilizers were applied at final land preparation. Remaining 2/3 of N was applied as top dressed in two equal split at 40 and 70 days after sowing (DAS). Maize varieties were sown on 14, March 2012 Waterlogging stress was imposed as per treatment and the water level was kept 2.0 to 2.5 cm above the soil surface. The water level was maintained by control irrigation in each growth stages up to continuous five days. Three plants per variety per plot were sampled at different growth stages for recording growth parameters. Plants parts were separated in to leaf, stem, cob and tassel depending on growth stages. Leaf area index was measured with an automatic area meter (LI 3100 C, LI-CoR, USA). Leaves and other plant parts were dried in an oven at 800C for 72 hours and dry weight was measured. Chlorophyll content was measured by chlorophyll meter and expressed as SPAD unit. Maize was harvested on 4, July 2012. Yield components of each variety were taken from randomly selected 5 plants from each plot. At harvest, the yield data were recorded plot wise and analyzed statistically.

The effect of waterlogging stress and different varieties of maize showed significant influence on growth, yield contribution characters, grain and stover yield. The maximum plant height, higher leaf area index (LAI), total dry matter (TDM) and chlorophyll content were observed in no waterlog treatment compared to other treatments which reflected on grain yield of maize varieties. Among the varieties V8, V7 and V6 performed better when waterlogging imposed at grain filling stage (W4). Waterlogging imposed at 4-leaf stage and in between tasselling-silking stage were the most vulnerable growth stages of maize. Among the maize genotypes C-1921, C-555 and NK-40 performed better under waterlogged conditions.
