Fruit Size, Yield and Quality of Guava Cv. Kazi Piara as Affected by Fruit Thinning

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted on five years old guava plants of Cv. Kazi Piara to investigate the influence of different levels of fruit thinning (0, 25, 50 and 75 percent/plant) on fruit size, yield and quality. Larger and heavier fruits as well as higher yield per plant and maximum TSS (%) were obtained from the thin- ned plant. Number of broken branches and fruit loss due to berakage of branches per plant were less with the increasinq rate of fruit thinning. The longest (10.49 cm). widest (10.49 cm) and heaviest fruit (534.0 g) and also the highest TSS of mesocarp (10.84%) and endocarp (15.79%) were recorded in 75 percent thinning treatment.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum thinning practice for maximum production of fruits of better quality with minimum plant damage

Methodology:

Kazi Piara plants of about the same age, vigour and stand growing at the Mango Research Station, Nawabganj, Bangladesh were used for this study during the period from June to September 1990. The plants were about five years old planted at a distance of 4 x 4m. There were four treatments viz. no thinning of fruits (0% thinning), 25 percent thinning of fruits, 50 percent thinning of fruits and 75 percent thinning of fruits. The experiment was laid out in the completely randomized block design with three replications. A single plant was taken as a unit for a treatment in a replication. The plants were fertilized with 150, 160 and 135 g nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium respectively. Urea, triple superphosphate and muriate of potash were applied as sources of N, P and K respectively. The fruits were thinned by hand when the fruit weight was about 20 g on an average. Fruits which were allowed to develop were uniformly distributed throughout the plant. Fruits were harvested at edible maturity stage during July- September, 1990. The data on fruit size, yield, number of broken branches, number of fruit loss due to breakage of branches per plant and total soluble solid (TSS%) of mesocarp and endocarp were recorded and were analyzed staistically.

Achievement/Findings:

The larger, and heavier fru- its as well as higher yield per plant and maximum total soluble solid (TSS%) were noted in fruits of thinned plants. The length. width, weight and TSS of guava fruit increased with the increasing rate of thinning. The longest (10.49 cm) widest (10. 49 cm). and heaviest fruit (534.0g) and also the highest TSS of mesocarp (10.84%) and endocarp (15.79%) were obtained from the 75 percent fruit thinning treatment. It is well known that the weight of fruit is a function of length and width. The data showed that relationship between length, width and weight of fruit was directly proportional and that any increase in length and width brought about a corresponding increase in weight of fruit. Variation in fruit size within the treatment was due to the capacity of the plant to support its fruit. The number of broken branches and truit loss due to breakage of branches per plant were less with the increasing rate of fruit thinning. However, the unthinned (0% thinning) plants had the highest number of broken branches and fruit loss due to breakage of branches followed by the plants of 25, 50 and 75 percent thinning.
