Influence of Variety and Site on the Response of Grasspea to Inoculation with Elite Strains of Rhizobium

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiments were conducted at Gazipur and RARS, Jamalpur during 2004-2005 and 2005-2006. In 2004-2005, two varieties of grasspea viz. BARI Khesari-2 and Jamalpur local and in 2005-2006, three varieties viz. BARI Khesari-1, BARI Khesari-2 and Jamalpur local and rhizobial inoculum (Rhizobium strain RLs-10) were used. The experiment was designed in RCB having 4 replications. Each variety was tested with/without Rhizobium inoculation. In 2004-2005, inoculated plants gave significantly higher nodule number and weight, stover and seed yield compared to non-inoculated plants. Between two varieties, BARI Khesari-2 produced the highest nodule number and weight, and shoot weight. Jamalpur local gave the highest seed yield at Gazipur and BARI Khesari-2 at Jamalpur. Jamalpur local gave higher seed yield at Gazipur and BARI Khesari-2 at Jamalpur. In 2005-2006, inoculated plants also gave significantly higher results. Among three varieties, BARI Khesari-1 produced the highest nodule number, nodule and shoot weight. BARI Khesari^-1 gave the highest seed yield at Gazipur and Jamalpur local at Jamalpur. The overall results indicated that BARI Khesari-1 gave the highest seed yield with inoculation at Gazipur and Jamalpur local at Jamalpur though the highest nodulation were observed in BARI Khesari-1 at both the locations.

Objectives:

To study the response of inoculation with different plant genotypes
To study the effect of different sites (Agro-ecological zones) with inoculation.

Methodology:

Grasspea was planted on 29 November at Central Research Farm, BARI, Gazipur and 05 December 2005 at Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), BARI, Jamalpur. The experiment was designed in randomized complete block having four replications in each treatment. Three varieties of grasspea viz. BARI Khesari-1, BARI Khesari-2 and Jamalpur local were tested. Each variety was treated with or without Rhizobium inoculant. Unit plot size was 4 m x 3 m. There were six treatment combinations. Basic doses of phosphorus @ 22 kg P ha^-1 as TSP, potash @ 42 kg K ha^-1 as muriate of potash, sulphur @ 20 kg S ha^-1 and zinc @ 5 kg Zn ha^-1 as zinc oxide were applied in the field. Urea was applied neither in the inoculated nor in the noninoculated plots. Peat based rhizobial inoculum (Rhizobium strain RLs-10) @ 1.5 kg ha^-1 was used for seed inoculation. During the course of the experiment, growth and development of plants in the field were carefully observed. At 50% flowering stage, 10 randomly selected plants were uprooted from each unit plot. Dry weight of roots, shoots and nodules including nodule numbers were recorded. The plants were harvested on 12 March 2006 at Gazipur and 16 March 2006 at Jamalpur. Data on plant height, 1000-seed weight (g), stover yield and seed yield were also taken. All data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Among three varieties studied, BARI Khesari-1 gave the significantly higher nodule number (31.4/plant at Gazipur and 19.2/plant at Jamalpur), nodule weight (96.1 mg/plant at Gazipur and 35.8 mg/plant at Jamalpur), root weight (0.06 g/plant at Gazipur and 0.07 g/plant at Jamalpur) and shoot weight (1.58 g/plant at Gazipur and 1.10 g/plant at Jamalpur). BARI Khesari-1 recorded higher stover yield (1.81 t/ha) at Gazipur but Jamalpur local at Jamalpur (1.52 t/ha). Seed yield was higher (1.17 t/ha) with BARI Khesari-1 at Gazipur and Jamalpur local (1.26 t/ha)at Jamalpur. Inoculated plants gave significantly higher nodule number (27.1/plant at Gazipur and 17.8/plant at Jamalpur), nodule weight (83.8 mg/plant at Gazipur and 31.2 mg/plant at Jamalpur), root weight (0.06 g/plant at Gazipur and 0.07 g/plant at Jamalpur), shoot weight (1.52 g/plant at Gazipur and 1.10 g/plant at Jamalpur), stover yield (1.90 t/ha at Gazipur and 1.44 t/ha at Jamalpur) and seed yield (1.12 t/ha at Gazipur and 1.24 t/ha at Jamalpur). The highest nodule number (38.6/plant at Gazipur and 22.6/plant at Jamalpur), nodule weight (119.0 mg/plant at Gazipur and 43.5 mg/plant at Jamalpur), shoot weight (1.69 g/plant at Gazipur and 1.28 g/plant at Jamalpur) in the BARI Khesari-1 variety with inoculation. BARI Khesari-1 with inoculation gave the highest seed yield (1.30 t/ha) at Gazipur and Jamalpur local with inoculation gave the highest seed yield (1.36 t/ha) at Jamalpur. The results are in agreements with the findings of Bhuiyan et al. (1997, 1998, 1999), who worked on grasspea in recent years.
