Studies on the Physical Properties of Jute Fibers Harvested at Different Stages of Growth

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

With the growing awareness about environmental pollution a tendency has developed throughout the world to use more and more jute products in place of synthetics which has made inroads into the jute market. To meet this challenge it has become imperative to develop jute products for diversified use and also to modify the conventional jute products. To achieve this, different jute products are to be made with fibers of different quality. For this purpose different parameters of jute fibers harvested at different stages of growth were determined. Three varieties of jute were cultivated in the Manikgong farm and harvested at different stages (70, 80, 90, 100 and110 days). Thereafter, the physico-mechanical properties (brightness, whiteness, tenacity, breaking twist per inch, bundle strength, linear density, textile modulus and extension at break) were studies according to the standard method. In respect of strength, breaking twist, elongation at break, tenacity and modulus jute fiber of 80 days of variety BJC -718 is better than fiber of other ages.

Objectives:

To develop diversified jute products with fiber of suitable quality. studies on intrinsic and extrinsic properties of jute and its products and their modification

Methodology:

Three varieties (BJC -718, BJC- 2197 and CVE-3,) of jute were cultivated in the Manikgong farm and harvested at different stages (70, 80, 90, 100 and 110 days). Thereafter, the physico-mechanical properties such as brightness, whiteness, tenacity, breaking twist per inch, bundle strength, linear density, textile modulus, extension at break were measured by Photo volt Meter, Twist tester, Pressley bundle strength microscope, Instron machine according to the standard method at room temperature and humidity condition..

Achievement/Findings:

The physical and mechanical properties of jute fiber of variety BJC-2142, harvested at different stages of growth found better than that of CVE-3 in view of brightness, whiteness and breaking twist. In respect of strength, breaking twist, elongation at break, tenacity and modulus jute fiber of 80 days of variety BJC -718 is better than fiber of other ages. For both varieties BJC 2142 and CVE-3 fiber of age 90 possess higher whiteness and brightness value than those of other ages.
