Success of Veneer Grafting in Mango as Affected by Time and Variety

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Vegetative propagation of five commercial varieties of mango namely, Fazli, Langra, Khirsapat, Gopalbhog and Ashwina by veneer grafting was tried starting from 1st May to 16th September 1992 to find out the most suitable time for grafting under Nawabganj, Bangladesh climatic condition. Percent success of grafting was higher (87.0) in Fazli and lower (79.7) in Khirsapat. Minimum days to bud break (19.9) were required for the variety Gopalbhog while maximum days (24.5) were need for Fazli variety. The highest success (96.9%) and minimum days (16.8) for bud breaking were recorded when the grafting was done on 16th June and the lowest success (80.0%) and maximum days (24.8) required on 1st September grafting. Growth characters were also influenced by both variety and time of grafting.

Objectives:

To find out the combined effects of time of grafting and variety under veneer method of vegetative propagation.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted under irrigated condition at the Mango Research Station, Nawabganj during 1992. To find out the best time for veneer grafting in different varieties of mango, freshly defoliated scions were grafted on 1st and 16th day of each month starting from May to September 1992. The varieties taken for the study were Fazli, Langra, Khirsapat, Gopalbhog and Ashwina, The experiment was laid out in RCB factorial design, with twenty plants as unit plot and three replicates. Mango seed stones were sown in the nursery bed during first week of July 1991 and seedings of uniform height and thickness were selected for this grafting operation. Observations were recorded in respect of final success and length of sprouts at 120 days after respective dates of operation.

Achievement/Findings:

The varieties tested in this study are also suitable though they exhibits a significant difference in their performance. By considering all it may be safely concluded that under Nawabgnaj agroclimatic condition, the best time for veneer grafting is mid May to mid August in any of the above mentioned varieties.
