Effect of Nitrogen on the Yield of Mukhi-kachu (colocasia Esculenta)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment, with different levels of N viz. 0, 40, 80, 120 and 160 kg per hectare for higher yield of mukhi-kachu (c. esculenta) was conducted at the Agril, Research Sub-station, Pahartali, Chittagong during the period from January to September, 1981. The result revealed that there existed a positive response of fertilizer N application over control for both yield and other yield contributing characters of mukhi-kachu. The yield of mukhi-kachu increased upto the application of 80 kg N/ha and then gradually decreased with further increase in N levels.

Objectives:

To determine the optimum N requirement of mukhi-kachu for having maximum yield, keeping the phosphorus and potash constant.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Sub-station Pahartali, Chittagong during the period from 5th January 1981 to 21st September, 1981. The cormels of a mukhi-kachu cultivar used in the experiment were collected from Hathazari, Chittagong. The experiment was laid-out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. There were five different levels of N viz. 0, 40, 80 120 and 160 kg N per hectare. The source of N was urea. A basal dyse of 90 kg triple super phosphate and 120 kg muriate of potash per hectare were applied in each unit plot at the time of final land preparation. The unit plot size was 4.8m x 4.8m. The cormels were planted at a depth of 5 cm from the ground level with a hill to hill and row to row spacing of 30 cm and 60 cm, respectively and then ridged up. Half of the urea of each of the treatment was top-dressed after 30 days of shoot emergence and the remaining half after 45 days of the first application. Necessary irrigations and other cultural operations were done regularly. The crop was harvested on 21st September 1981 i.e. 260 days after sowing.
