Comparative Performance of Different Varieties of Yardlong Bean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The performance of six yardlong bean varieties was studied at the Central Research Station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Dhaka. The variety Chinese string bean was the highest yielder (17.18 t/ha).

Objectives:

To assess the comparative performance of a number of local and exotic varieties of yardlong bean under Bangladesh condition.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Central Research Station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Dhaka during the period from 20 April to 6 September, 1982. The soil of the experimental plot is a stiff clay having the pH value around 5.6 and is deficient in organic matter. Six varieties of yardlong bean were included in this study. The varieties were Nepal 1, Thai, Red Rangamati, Chinese string bean, Asparagus bean (Japan) and Lubia pudofa (India). Among these varieties Chinese string bean is the only recommended one (Anonymous, 1980). The seeds were collected by the Vegetable Section, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Dhaka. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The size of each unit plot was 2.25m X 1.5m. The seeds were sown in the unit plots on 20 April, 1982 with a planting distance of 75 cm x 45cm. Farmyard manure at the rate of 20 t/ha and fertilizers at the rate of 22.5 kg N, 90 kg P₂O₅ and 60 kg K₂O per hectare were applied in the field through urea, triple superphosphate and muriate of potash, respectively. Farmyard manure and triple superphosphate were applied at the time of final land preparation while urea and muriate of potash were applied as top dressing in two instalments -one at 25th day and the other at 40th day of sowing. Supports to the vines were provided with bamboo sticks. Inter cultural operations such as, weeding, mulching, irrigations and spraying of insecticides were done as and when necessary. Harvesting of green edible pods was started on 16 June, and continued upto 6 September, 1982.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest number of pods per plant (80.33) was produced by Lubia pudofa and the lowest (28.08) by Nepal 1. There was no difference in this chara cter between NepalI and Thai. Chinese String bean had the longest pods (50.93 cm). Shortest pods (13.45cm) were observed in Lubia pudofa. The highest number of seeds per pod (14.58) was obtained ftom the Chinese string bean, and the lowest (10.4) was obtained from Lubia pudofa. The varieties producing the maximum weight of 100 seeds (18g) were Nepali and Thai. The variety Chinese string bean was the highest yielder (17.18 t/ha).
